Glad you got that crank bolt out because the 5.0L engine is a bit strange in that it can have either a right hand thread or left hand thread crank bolt depending on the markings on the head of the bolt.
Something I had never heard of before.

Was yours a regular right hand crank bolt?

hi no mine was a left hand crank was very lucky to have access to a land rover tech and topix informed us of the two numbers on the bolt

109 and 129.

Default update

right guys,

very sorry for the lack of updates. the workshop has been very busy so things took a lot longer.

so the engine was dropped and a new timing kit installed. one of the tensioners were seized so the chain was slack.

new timing kit and the engine starts first time and done around 50 starts and no starter motor issues. no more rough idle but showing a misfire on cylinders 6 and 7 ( hoping its the usual spark plug or coil)

now i am dealing with the following issues.

i have the these codes showing on the diagnostics along with the restricted performance warning:

p0016 p0017 p0018 p0019

all the above relate to the correlation between one of the cam sensors with the crank sensor.

timing is spot on as verified by the timing tools.

i was getting the same set of codes before aswell.

any ideas on this guys.

Not an expert on this, but here’s my 2 cents. If the timing is indeed spot on, then it seems logical that a sensor is bad. I have read elsewhere that the timing tools need to lock in all positions before putting the chain on, and that general eyeball alignment isn’t sufficient. Assuming you used tools to lock in timing.

Also I wouldn’t diagnose the misfire until the timing relationships resolved.

All the best.

One other note is that a member noted that the VVT can be particularly sensitive to impact. Not sure whether a broken VVT would set these codes, but just a thought.

If if you are interested, Dave Tibbs on the older model XF forum (x250) would be able to tell you what codes his VVT issue threw at him. Check out his 5.0 engine rebuild thread. The VVT issue comes up at comment 243.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...177468/page13/

Regardless of the outcome, we would love to hear your updates.

All the best.

thank you for the replies.

land rovers own timing tools were used with everything locked in place before starting.

i have read many threads where these fault codes have been a timing issue but all of them have either one or two codes.

mine is giving a fault for the correlation between all four sensors with the crank sensor.

surely if all four readings were actually off, the engine would not start or sound as sweet as it does.

i will carry out further diagnostic today and update as soon as possible.

had a look at the live data on the snap on machine.

does this make sense to anyone here

actual variable valve timing position - exhaust valve - bank 1 - 136.08

actual variable valve timing position - exhaust valve - bank 2 - 138.53

actual variable valve timing position - intake valve - bank 1 - 94.68

actual variable valve timing position - intake valve - bank 2 - 93.68

I don’t know about these numbers. I would assume the intake and exhaust timing can vary significantly because that’s what the VVT is supposed to do. Let us know how you end up proceeding.

BTW if you don’t mind, could you PM me where you got your supercharger for so cheap? Thanks.

Hi zu11y did you ever get to the bottom of this issue?

I have a 5.0 XFR which shows P0017 and restricted performance. The engine has been rebuilt following head gasket failure and the chains & tensioners replaced. Engine all timed up using JLR tools. It's driving me mad now

Check out the JLR TopiX subscription options available, you could choose to subscribe to a single make, model & year of your car for as little as a day or longer for a very reasonable price even if you choose all (manual, bulletins and diagnostics including the real JLR SDD system). I haven't used the the SDD tool yet, but you would need to download the tool to your computer & have an OBD cable to connect to the diagnostics port under your dash.
I've subscribed to TopiX, and consider it a great tool, well worth the money - and you can choose price by choosing time period (a day to a year) , how wide a range of vehicles (from specific make/model/year to all) to what products (manuals/bulletins/diagnostics)
Worth checking out.

hi i did check all the wiring and replaced the sensors but could not cure the fault. i concluded that it must be due to something inside the engine. mine was running perfectly fine and even though it said restricted the car was not in any sort of limp mode.

anyway i was not going to strip it out again so had the fault codes mapped out from a tuner i know. around 2k miles later and absolutley thrashed its still going sweet.

Thanks for info zu11y. In the end I removed the bank 1 exhaust VVT (I fitted 4 new ones in the rebuild) and put the original back on, problem solved.

Unfortunately I still have P0341 camshaft position sensor implausible signal. Have swapped the CMP sensors around but no joy. The car drives fine but every 3rd start-up it throws the MIL.
