A huge predicament - Jaguar expert please chime in
So the story goes, I bought a 2013 XJ 5.0L with a blown Motor (due to coolant loss) low compression on cylinder 2...the seller is moving back to Europe so I got the car for a pretty good deal. The seller already paid a reputable shop $12K for an engine replacement job. So I went to the shop and talked to the shop owner and everything was Cherry. So I felt good about it and purchased the vehicle.
After the engine was replaced, the shop reported that it didn't work because it turned out the engine was from 2011 and it won't work for a 2013. The shop then did a lot of research trying to find another low mileage 5.0L engine with no avail. They talked the possibility of rebuilding the engine but they found the machine shop can't do it and Jaguar doesn't sell engine parts separately.
So basically I am in a predicament.
Does anyone knows which other years would work on a 2013 car? 2014 and 2015? are 5.0L really that hard to find? or perhaps source to buy a rebuilt engine? any suggestion on how to get out of this predicament like a winner?
Apparently The engine with Vin "B" won't work with mine...my car has a vin no SAJWA2G1xxxxxxx
Worst case scenario is I guess take the 12K back from the shop and parting the car out.

Here is where a 2016 SC engine was placed in a 2011, hope this helps.

To make a 2011 engine run in a 2013+ car you need to replace
-flexplate
-starter
-crank sensor should be used from a 2013
-vvt units
-also make sure that the supercharger itself is fitted with electronic bypass valve, not a vacuum one.
otherwise engines are a same.

I think I'd take the 12k. A 2013 XJ can't be worth much mare than the 12k; certainly not on a trade. If you have the room and the time and the energy to "part it out", you might be able to make quite a bit more. Good luck.
If the previous owner paid the shop, I would suspect the refund is legally due to the previous owner. That is who the shop has the contract with, correct? Then they should pay the OP, or take the car back, but they’ve left the country haven’t they.
But the shop might say They’ve done at least some (or all) non-refundable work. Who is responsible for finding an engine that works?
I would never have gone into this deal because of all the scenarios that could turn it into a real mess, at least not without a clear contract saying who is responsible for what.
