IDS / OBD 2 tool
Hello
Anyone bought a device that connects to your car's ECU? I am interested in diagnostics and service items like EPB. The family has 2 Jags and a Discovery 4 LR. Given that I see companies grouping Land Rover and Jaguar together I was wondering if there is a compatible electronic gizmo that will connect with all these cars.
Anyone any experience with Foxwell? They offer NT630 that seems compatible on paper.
For LR I heard of a company called Blackbox solutions but not sure about compatibility with Jags?
UK based.

I have the Nt530 which is available with Jaguar/Land Rover specific software that does not only OBD II, but Service Minder resets, reads on power train , body and chassis modules, and module resets. I don't think the software on the 630 has anywhere near the depth of functions for a specific vehicle. The 530 has more detailed vehicle specific software that can be added for other vehicles. It can be purchased as a bumdle with the JLR sofware.

I had a quick look online.
IDS
Integrated Diagnostic System
SSD
Symptom Driven Diagnostics
Hitherto, I had not heard of SSD which is newer and seems to be used more on Jaguars.
IDS is used on old Jags and newer (post) 2005 Land Rovers.
£200 on Ebay would buy oftware
Jaguar Land Rover Range Rover Diagnostics kit IDS SDD JLR 131 +138 + Cable
that would work with Jags from 96 to 2014 and LR 05 to 2014.Not sure how genuine it is.
The operational requirements of Windows XP Professional only was quite restrictive.
Looking for something that works with a Land Rover Discovery 4 2009, F type 2016, XJ 2018.
I got VCDS for my own Skodas which is quite powerful. Being mechanically minded I am more interested in diagnostics and servicing rather than recoding software.
Is there a one size fits all or a case of buying for separate marques.
bmbmdmb, you can get that kit, then if you do some looking online, there are copies of SDD159 out there that can be downloaded for free. I have a laptop with 159 on it and has all the functionality that I need plus some. With the version that I got, I just keep the wifi turned off on my laptop when I have SDD, otherwise it will force you to log in to TOPIX which is a paid subscription..
Thanks. NT630 - I suspected that it might only scratch the surface.

I decided just to buy a laptop with the software preinstalled and cable included off eBay, pirated or not, at least someone else has gone through the trouble of setting it all up for me, because the system requirements are very finicky.
Took me about 3 hours to get the laptop all set up and to the point that the laptop was useful. Not sure if that may push you one way or another. Sdd does not download all that fast and getting it to install was very slow. It doesn't move at all fast, even once it is loaded.

A vendor has suggested I might need separate systems.
SDD has Jaguar
Pathfinder has Land Rover.
Having got a laptop for VAG cars and the time element sat fiddling, particularly when cold is huge. I might go for the NT530 when they bring a new model and reduce price. It is compatible upto 2018 or rather 24month prior to date.
Main items I want are battery management, EPB, service reset. Diagnostics are nice and activating modules eg ABS for brake bleeds.

Pathfinder is the replacement for SDD. You need to check since you have a 2018 XJ as I "think" that year requires Pathfinder.
Also Pathfinder is for JLR so it includes Jaguar and Land Rover models.
SDD is the best but it's hard to use and it's made for dealers so you can't get any help with it.
I have SDD and use a dedicated laptop that I had already. But if you have VAG up and running you should have enough skills to plow thru SDD.
But you might consider the Foxwell unit. It can do a lot and most home guys mainly want to check for codes and reset the service indicator.
So I recommend the Autel HT200 as it's the cheapest way we have found to reset the service indicator on your XJ.
Remember the XJ is the only JLR model that requires an external device to reset the service indicator. Kind of a pain!
