I have a 2011 Jaguar XJL 5.0 normally aspirated engine. The rubber hose near the throttle body has cracked and as a result the engine checklight is on. The part itself is quite expensive. I manage to find a shop which specialises in custom air intake piping and they can fabricate it for around 60% of the price. The only concern I have is that the engine checklight will still be on. Do you guys think it's worth to get the original part or go the custom route?

 

Is this the part you we’re referring to? I sold one just a few months ago. They break after 5-6 years because the plastic gets brittle.

If you can afford it (~$250) I would buy a metal one from Mina or similar. Then it won’t break again.

Alternatively buy the real Jaguar part cheap (~$145) online from Reno Jaguar or Carlsbad Jaguar. Make sure you order the part with the same number of little air return inlets as yours. Some have one and some have two. Yours looks like it has one, so it would be the same part number that I sold above in the link.

Where is the crack? I could not see it in your pictures.

The crack is at the rubber part near the throttle body. Unfortunately I have to replace the whole air intake.

The air intake part number for my car is C2D2728. It will cost me about 300 pounds. The reason why I am thinking of getting it custom made is bcos in the future if there are any issues, I can just change the rubber part instead of changing the whole air intake. The parts connecting the throttle body and air box will be rubber and the other parts will be metal. The question I have is, will the engine checklight be on if I get it custom made?

 

No, the check engine light should not be on if there are no leaks and the MAF sensors are still in the right spot.

 

Now that I pulled up your part it looks quite different than mine. It has some bulgy plastic bit where the intake comes together. Is that for noise suppression? One of the air return/ breather inlets looks bulkier too.

As I’m not in the UK, I’m not sure whether there is a regulation being met by that style part. Air intake is rather uncomplicated, but that part appears more complex than necessary. Hopefully any custom piece you make will comply with necessary regulations so you don’t have to change it back later.

Just picked up my car and so far after almost 30km's of driving th check light has not came back and hopefully it stays that way.
