I have a 2012 XJL Supersport, early build and it came with the fat, heavy key with more metal and the clam shell open. Although my key is bulky, I like it because it feels solid and expensive. In the manual it shows two different key styles. Does anyone know why some XJ's might have one key style versus another? Was it a change they made in the middle of the model year or did certain trim levels get different keys?

 

From JEPC it doesn't appear to be that simple. Look at the number of changes with VIN range:
