For the privilege of driving the best looking of all of them, the Jaguar XJL, plus not seeing yourself daily, I think the slight extra cost of the Jaguar for depreciation, is well worth it.

I couldn't agree with you more! This, by far, is one of the best cars that I have ever owned, and "I have owned a ton of them"! Style, ride, looks, feel....simply the best, and I considered changing, but have decided against it due to the simple love of the vehicle. I also own an "F" type, which is an entire other type of ride/feel and story..... Both as nothing but the best in my view on the road to date, and the change I would make is when and if the body styles significantly change for the better, which is hard to top.

I 3rd the opinion.

Default Advantage of a Corporate Lease Turn-In

In the USA, many, if not most, high-dollar luxury cars are leased because that entire monthly lease cost is a deductible business expense provided that car is used 100% for business only. Since most corporate executives own another car for pleasure, it's easy to meet that "100% business use" test. Leasing avoids the limitation on the amount of depreciation that may be claimed if that car was purchased. The lease rate factors in the amount of projected depreciation over the term of the lease, or a penalty for excessive mileage upon turn-in.

High depreciation benefits the second owner, who can save a bundle. I specifically searched for a 1-year old CPO XJ that was a corporate lease turn-in and was fortunate to find the exact car I wanted - colors, options, etc. Because that car had "high mileage" (28,000), I was able to negotiate the price even lower, to 60% of MSRP before my trade-in, because I knew that depreciation for high mileage must have been factored into that lease. I had no problem with that mileage because it was obviously all highway miles, which causes less wear and tear than short-trip, stop-and-go driving. Being CPO, my car had new brakes, almost new tires, and within a few months after I bought it a new water pump.

Buying CPO made good financial sense for me, now that I'm retired and don't have a business to run a leased car through. I'll let the other guy take the big depreciation hit for the first year or two, and spend that savings on my travels. The road to life is short, and I'm enjoying the drive!

I also purchased a 3 year old CPO car that had just came off a business lease for the same reasons as Stuart.
They are a pretty good deal plus full factory warranty which I only used once before it ran out.

Keep in mind that this thread is 5 years old. Comparing these vehicles today using 2016 models five years on puts the XJ solidly in last place in US dollars. This is not to say last place as the percentage of MSRP retained at five years, but still, JLR's abandonment of the flagship sedan hurts their values today. I agree with Ray, Stuart and Airth that this depreciation makes a used XJ affordable to many of us. I like my car more every time I drive it.
