Default New Owner (to be) Android Auto Question

Morning all,

Going to be new to Jaguar ownership with my first purchase of an XJ 2018. I'm going to see the car next week, and all things being straight and true, will be purchasing it as it fits all the criteria I was looking for (bar the black roof lining, so that'll be a retrofit). My question and the dealer hasn't managed to answer, is does it have Android Auto. Googling gives me mixed ideas, some saying the larger 10.2-inch screen supports it, and some saying that only cars after 2019 do. Without getting there and testing it, I was interested to know if there a definite, yes, these screens do, or model year does.
When I turn up to view, is it likely to support it?

Thanks in advance

My 2018MY XJ supports it (built date September 2017) so what I can say is it is not restricted to 2019 cars only..

Thats good then, bit of a deal breaker if it doesnt for me.

Do you have the larger infotainment system fitted? I'm guessing this is the link to what is links the android auto setup.

Mine has the larger 10" screen. Not sure if all 10" screen XJs have android auto. If you want to save a wasted journey, ask the dealer to send you a pic of the dash page which has the "android auto" icon on it for at least some reassurance it is fitted, then take your phone and a USB cable to confirm when viewing the car.

The car’s entertainment computer has the capability. The deciding factor is the screen size.
8” screen is disabled.
10.2” screen good to go

Also even if it has the 10.2 inch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay has to be enabled by the dealer. There are workarounds you can find in the forum

Awesome, thanks for that. This is the screen it has, I'm guessing I can go to a dealer or independent and get them to activate it if it doesn't?

Thanks for all the help, at least put my mind at rest.

Yep that’s the right screen. So hardware wise you should be fine

OK, went and test drove the car. Really liked it, found the driver seat a bit thin on the bottom, but the car is nice. Tried the android auto on got this screen

so is this just needing the up date to the newest firmware?
checked settings on phone and is all correct, plus android auto worked in the Toyota I drove there.

Any ideas?

That’s not Android Auto. Looks like the car is trying to connect to Incontrol App on your phone.
Only sure way to tell if it has Android Auto just by looking is to check the menu. Like in this pic you can see Android Auto and Carplay

Thanks SAAlexander1985. I've asked them to go hunt to see if they can find it. I think the dealer is going to get a tech to look tomorrow to see if it can be upgraded to it if it doesn't have it.

I'm also interested in your lower dash and heat controls. Is that a late model design or something extra. Looks really cool and not seen an XJ in the UK for sale with that setup!

That’s an aftermarket part. I had a hard braking event which resulted in half a bottle of soda spilling into the original. The aftermarket option was half the price and looks more modern so….

Can you post a link to the one you bought? Do you know if it works with massage seats? Any issues, would you do it again if price wasn't a concern?

It supports every feature my car has. I know some people complained about not having the heated windshield button but mine has it. The only little minor annoyance is sometimes when am turning on the AC, I have to try to hit the Auto button 2-3 times. Seems like the screen calibration is a little off but it only happens for the Auto button. Everything else works fine. Very minor issue so yes I would %100 take that over stock.

When I get home I’ll try to fine the link and send it to you.

Also if I remember correctly, Android Auto only works via cable, so you need to plug your phone into the USB in the center console.

Once you fo that, you can choose to have Android Auto automatically start when you plug in.

I find the Jaguar InControl apps useless, personally.

I bought them for our cars too, and it makes me regret every day that I waited to get them.

I did plug the phone in with the cable into the centre console bit, in the drivers side USB port (as I read somewhere the port mattered). It didnt go onto Android Auto like it doesnt on the other cars or ask to set it up etc.

I didnt even know you could buy wireless Android Auto devices!! I'm 100% getting one of those. We have wireless some of our new Transits as its bob on bar not charging the phone.

So I guess my last question is, should not having Android Auto be a deal breaker, and looking at the car, etc, what percentage-wise is it likely to be a simple firmware update that just hasn't been done to add the Smart Phone Pack to the car that I can take it to Jaguar to have done. if its only 50% then I might bite the bullet and get the car.
