Newbie tech questions
Repost of my post from New Member Intro:
Hi,
I’m a new member and 1st time jag owner in Tampa, Florida, U.S.A.
Love the look of my black XJ Portfolio with London tan interior. 26k miles.
My car’s in service date was August 22 2016, so I still have some new car warranty and included maintenance left, and extended the CPO to 7 years 100k miles from original in service date. A blessing it seems given some of the horror stories I am reading on these forums.
Thanks for all the helpful info on here and enjoy your cars.
A few tech questions off the bat (not confident in the answers from my dealer, although I fear he may be correct):
1. Is there really no way to control the navigation via voice commands? Big disappointment if so.
2. Can I or can I not get a software update on this model to enable apple CarPlay and android auto? Conflicting info.
3. Can I use any US carrier’s SIM card to enable data connectivity, or must I use sprint as the dealer suggested? Do I just insert the SIM card or do I need a separate device as the seemingly confused sprint rep suggested?
a. Would the data speed so obtained be 4G and eventually 5G (i.e. the carrier’s speed) or is there some sort of in-car limitation that restricts speeds to 3G as the manual suggests?
Apologies for so many questions from a noob.
Thanks in advance for any and all responses.
Cheers!

mchamber, to the best of my knowledge, nav is only finger controlled. There is no voice option that I am aware of. Please keep in mind that I have a 2012 and that there may have been an update that came later that would offer that.
As for getting Carplay or other player type functionality, you might get it if you get the latest and greatest map version that is out there. May want to look at what the dealership says about an updated map USB for your car.
When it comes to the SIM card, I would talk with your cell phone company and have them put in writing that if they send you a SIM card and it doesn't work, then you can return it free of charge. If it works, then you have the functionality. If it doesn't, you are just out a bit of your time. If they are not willing to stand behind this, then odds are, it is not going to work.
As for the speed, I would think that your car would be able to handle atleast 4G as that was the standard at the time of production and had been for a few years. I would really be surprised if you would get 5G service because your car is a few years old. It may be possible that the info-tainment system would limit it as it is handling a lot of other stuff and it may not have the bandwidth to handle any more data than that.

The dealership would better be able to answer your question on 3g vs 5g, but my understanding is there are hardware limitations. I.E. your iPhone can't receive 5G over AT&T via software update. There are "fake" 5G symbols being pushed right now on some carriers.
