Default No instructions in handbook to disable passenger airbag

I'm considering disabling the passenger airbag for my childs front facing car seat. Can't find the area in the dashboard to do this and the handbook mentions nothing of it.

Its illegal to have a rear facing child seat in the front, but from what I understand its safe and legal to have a front facing one, but still wanted to disable the airbag. Is this possible on the XJ?

On a side note, also having the same problem with my wifes Jazz.

Some of the cars, like mine, auto-disable for any light passenger. Yours also?

The warning lamp in the centre of the roof console will illuminate dimly when the passenger airbag is disabled. At least it does on mine, but it also goes out after a few minutes so is not on permanently. I don't think there is a switch to control it - I think that it is automatic as JagV8 says.

What does that lamp do on yours with and without someone in the passenger seat?

My light comes one says airbags are off (with a number 2 next to it) when I start the car. It then switches off.

Does the same thing whether a passenger is in the seat or not. So dont think it means anything.

Does it say anywhere specifically that it switches the driver side off based on passenger weight?

Sorry I mean in the manual somewhere. I assume you read somewhere that it does this.

I think you're utterly misreading what's been posted and what occurs.

From what I have read in the 2012 Manual the front passenger seat airbag is activated by weight and that is 100lbs. There is no switch as that would be against federal regulations.

Same as my car, then. (Well, dunno what weight, but don't care either.)

it is weight deactivated. when the seat weight sensor iirc senses less the 60#s it turns off the passenger side air bag only(light stays on) how ever whether law or not it is ALWAYS recommended to not have children and car seats in the front seat but in the back

Thanks guys, yeh here in the UK you can't have a rear facing car seat, but you can have a front facing one in the front, ideally with the car seat as far back as possible and airbag switched off.

So let me see if I'm correct in my assumption. We have a car designed and built in the UK and we are questioning the front seat airbag deactivation for a child seat. If the child seats are allowed in the front then it should be a no brainer that the airbag is deactivated.

A tiny adult may also weigh so little that the airbag is deactivated.

Why all the angst? It's designed to be the safest it can be.

It's not designed for people to put children or babies at risk. Adults are supposed to know better. (I'm hoping no-one on here is at odds with this.)

Wasn't trying to be pissy, just thought that the UK owners manual would have the necessary information and residents of the UK would be aware the child restraint regulations.

Parents of young children hopefully do know, and of course there are proper ISOFIX fittings (I gather) already present in the rear but I expect not present in the front, so kids will be in the rear.

I wouldn't expect much other than basic info in the handbook as it's not really a teach-in about UK laws or child safety.

I still don't see any reason why it might do the last item in post #6.
