Oil Confusion
Hi All,
I just snagged a beautiful 2013 XJL 3.0 AWD with 50,000KM (31,000miles) in almost mint condition. It also has a 3 year /30,000km Prestige warranty remaining.
The original owner I purchased it from gave me all the service records form the local Jaguar dealer where it had been serviced every year or as required.
Here is my confusion. The owners manual shows the engine oil as 5W30 6.5L meeting spec WSS M2C913-C. The oil cap shows 5W20 and the Jag dealer has been using 0W20 Castrol Edge Pro with spec STJLR51.522; STJLR.03.5006.
I has purchased 10L of 0/W20 Castrol Edge with spec STJLR.03.5006./ from a local non Jaguar store and used it for the oil change. Should I drain the $200 bucks of oil regular Castol Edge and put the Edge Pro in its place?
Thanks,
Karl

No need to drain the oil and waste your money, what's in there is perfectly OK.
JLR changed the oil spec for the AJ126 around 2014, from 5W20 to 0W20 and from 51.522 to 03.5006. After mucho research on this subject I came to the conclusion that the primary reason for going to 0W20 was to eke out another one or two mpg on the CAFE and Euro fuel economy tests and the secondary reason was to (very slightly) reduce timing chain wear and rattle on cold start-up.
IMHO the "recommended" Castrol Edge Pro has always been a bit of a con, a marketing dodge, and as long as you use a good quality full synthetic oil either 5W20 or 0W20 which meets any of those specs you are good to go.
Proof of the pudding is I have never used any type of Castrol oil in my XFR, XFS or F-Type (which has the exact same AJ126 as your car), instead I have used Aussie brands Nulon and Penrite, and I have never had a single engine problem.
The main thing is not the brand or exact spec of oil but to change the oil at least twice as often as the service schedule says, 16,000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first is waaaaay too long for this engine.

I have used both 0-20w and 5-20w. Since I live in a warm climate, Southern California, I use 5-20w. If I lived where it got much colder, I would probably use 0-20w. 144k miles and still ran fine with no oil usage. I always changed the oil at 7500 mile. Cheap insurance. Don’t stress over it. If you put 20-50w in, then it would be time to stress.
Thanks for the replays guys. I checked with the local Jag dealer and 7 L of the recommended Castrol oil was cheaper the non recommended auto parts store oil! Who knew.
I will use the non recommended Castrol for about 500kms and flush it and put in the recommended. I don't want to mess with my warranty.
Regards,
Karl

Good comments by OzXFR. I now use 0W-20 too but as posted above my oil filler cap has 5W-20 on it. I also went to a 6K-8K miles change interval based on reading the forum and what problems people had that followed the very long drain recommendations from Jaguar.
Only at 56K miles on my 2014 and so far all is good.
One final recommendation to CHECK all your fluid regularly! Oil and coolant levels are critical.
Many posts of people never checking oil and then wondering why my engine is destroyed. You don't even need to get out of the car so it's very easy to do.

It’s almost fun to change the oil and filter on the XJ since everything can be done without the need to elevate the car. Add to that, the fact that Liqui Moly oil and filter can be had under FCPEuro’s lifetime replacement warranty. You only have to pay for them once and after that it’s free!
I like to change the oil myself at 5K intervals because it’s so easy and inexpensive to do. With the money I save, I have the engine oil analyzed by Blackstone Laboratories. It’s the best of all worlds and something an old geezer like me (80 y/o) can easily do.
