Default Pilot Sport A/S 4 vs. Primacy 4 for Chicago Winter?

Hi, I live in the heart of Chicago and the tires on my 2017 XJL Portfolio 3.0 SC AWD need a change. I have a daily commute of 5 miles on main streets -- but not every day. I don't drive hard so I don't need max performance. It doesn't need to operate in 6" of snow, but maybe 2" and ice after plowing. I'd like a balance of comfort, performance, and quietness.

I know the optimum plan is to get some winter tires on new rims, but I don't have to go in the snow THAT much.

I've narrowed it down to the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 vs. Primacy 4 (or the CrossClimate 2) but would take other suggestions. thanks!

You probaply find CrossClimate 2 ticking all your boxes. Not sure about Primacy 4, but Pilot Sport 4 sure turns quite hard and slippery on freezing temp.

Default Good year round tires

I live in the north suburbs, park my car outside, and drive most every day all winter long. I have been running the Continental Extremecontact DWS 06 Plus, The winter handling is decent, spirited driving in summer and on wet roads is good, and in is a mid tier price. I have owned my XJ 5.0 s/c for 8 years, and have been happy enough that I have bought 3 times.

Good post about DWS 06 +... Excellent tire and for this car in particular.

You may also want to consider these: - Pirelli Scorpion AS plus 3. They market them for crossover etc., but in reality it is exactly the same tread pattern as for one of the Cinturato P7 A/S +'s whch I have on my CL500 and those are the quietest and smothest tire I have EVER had. The reviews clearly show it is the quietest, smoothest riding tire out there right now, and by quite a margin....

I would not recommend Cinturato P7 A/S + tyres for winter usage. Can be dangerous. The thread pattern do not tell how tyre perform in winter, its more about the how the compound performs in freezing temp. (no traction on plastic hard tyres in snow or ice)

Hint for US consumers: Check European online stores for tyre specification: This side of pond manufacturer of the tyre HAVE to show 3 values from tyre: Rolling restriction, Wet grip and Noise.

Yes agreed - the Pirelli Cinturato have not been recommended in the rain. They have tried to improve that in later P7 iterations... Apparently in snow they are ok, but in any event I would not recommend them for wet conditions. GIven you like quiet and comfort, you may wish to note, that the Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3's, however, were rated better in the wet and snow, but still not quite as good as the Cross Climate or Vredestein...

Equally, the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus is a great all round tire, a bit more sporty than the Scorpion AS Plus 3's but reportedly not as quiet or comfortable. Still very good though, as this report shows: -
