Be careful what you wish for. Here (also France, Spain, etc), we have appalling air quality due to diesel cars. A diesel scrappage scheme (people paid to scrap their cars) is one possibility. Both France & Spain have had to make commuters only use their cars on alternate days.

I'm told the Jaguar diesels are very clean though I'm no expert on the issue. However fuel consumption is very low indeed based on the number of visits to the gas station after I switched to diesel. And in an urban environment where low end torque comes in handy, I love the diesel. The performance is wonderful and the difference in sound, is barely perceptible.

By clean they typically mean low CO2 but ignore the carcinogens and poisons like PM and NOx. It's the NOx and PM that are way beyond limits in many UK areas and thus the court action against the UK government for failing to meet them (they are 6 years past the extended deadline).

It turns out that in real usage many many diesel engines emit far more (multiples of the claim) than the makers claim.

There is now talk of a diesel scrappage scheme to get them off the roads.

Hmm, didn't know that info about the PM and NOx emissions. You do have to admit though that the mileage of the diesel engines is amazing.

On a similar note, does anybody know if the F-Pace diesel engine in the US will be the same as the one advertised on the Jag UK website? I have asked this question on the F-Pace forum (wife is interested in that car), but no one seems to know the answer.

The diesels are ok, they have good power and great fuel economy, but are high maintenance in my opinion. I've been working on Jaguars for the past 14 years, the first 8 in the USA, and the last 6 in NZ. I see a lot of issues with turbos, turbo actuators, injectors, and DPF. They have cam belts, front and rear. Not trying to turn anyone away, but they will be pricy to maintain once warranty ends. Not sure if the F-Pace will get the diesel in the NAS market, but I can ask our distributor here in NZ and see if he is able to find out from UK. The new 3.0L is a bit different, turbos are cooled by engine coolant, not engine oil, and have even more torque.

My present XJ has a diesel engine and the new one will also have a diesel engine. In reading the specifications I remember that the power had gone up a bit.

My XJ is 6 years old and the diesel engine has had no problems at all. Perhaps just luck or perhaps because I have the car serviced as recommended - more or less.

Keep in mind that the quoted mpg is in Imperial and not US gallons. US mpg would be 41ish combined.
