Default Random P0101 - Resolved

For anyone that may get random P0101 codes, this may help you.

Background: while maintaining driving speed, when going up a very gradual hill and maintaining the gas pedal in the same spot, the check engine light would come on. When the codes were looked at, P0101 (may also get P010B code, P0101 is for Bank A (US driver's side), P010B is for Bank B (US passenger side)).

The fix: In my case, I cleaned the MAF sensors and no real change. I even replaced them one at a time with no change. Even changed the mass air pressure (MAP) sensor. All this had not real effect on the error code. Upon cleaning the throttle body, the error code has been gone and not returned, even when trying to make it come in.

Hopefully this helps someone that fights this problem. If you are thinking that the throttlebody was filthy, it wasn't. The big thing is ensuring you wipe the edge of the butterfly valve, not just the outer wall of the throttlebody.

Thank you - I am being challenged with the same issue on my 2008; P010B sets very occasionally at 70mph and almost at the same place which is a long straight section of road and only in the morning. I have wondered if the autumnal mornings and now cooler air here in central CA is a factor. I have cleaned MAF's and all appeared good. I will clean the throttle body tomorrow.

Great results!
Any tips on cleaning the MAF?
Did you leave them on the car?
Was the engine running when you cleaned it?

What product do you recommend to clean the MAF?
I know they have spray labeled as MAF cleaner.

clubairth1, I cleaned my MAF sensors using the MAF cleaner in a spray can. I had the engine off when I did mine. I made sure to spray down inside, dump out the extra, gently spray some into the sensor to let it sit for 20-30 seconds or so to then dump it out with a final rinse of spraying into the sensor. I never noticed any difference in performance with my car. Granted, my MAF sensors appeared clean before cleaning them.

Thanks Thermo! Just what I was looking for.
I have cleaned several MAF's on other cars and never really saw any changes but figured it would not hurt to do it.

Well this was a winner; cleaned the TB which was not that dirty, but the butterfly edge was black and since doing this the code has not come back and its been a pair of months. Now this was on an XKR however, the simple fix worked like a charm.

Thank you!
