RBDS Traffic System
Hello,
The RBDS-TMC traffic service on my 2015 XJL does not seem to be working. Is there some subscription or software update I need to apply to enable it? The traffic in the Atlanta area is atrocious and it would be a great feature to have operational!
Thanks for any advice!
Best, Dave

David,
The RDS-TMC system is a fairly complex system, and there are two schools of thoughts on how it works in the XJ.
1. The Nav unit in the XJ is sent signals (via the GPS feed) from other cars fitted with compliant equipment. The Nav then looks at the relative rate of motion of those vehicles against its known database, and recalculates a route. I think this is total bollocks. Not the idea, but how our system works! (I believe this is how more modern cars work).
2. The second idea is that the Radio Data System(RDS) collects data transmitted to/via the Traffic Management Channel(TMC) through local radio FM broadcast stations. Think of it as your FM radio is listening to 2 signals at the same times.
Now it is possible that your local FM stations can't be bothered to transmit traffic data anymore, after all 10+ years is getting 'old-school'. I have also noticed my TMC will 'gray out' in rural areas.
The fix? Check the manual for your MY. It is possible to turn the system ON and OFF, the manual will tell you how. FWIW, on my'12 it's P136-138.

It appears to be turned on but I get no traffic info on the screen; like road turning green if clear, yellow or red if congested etc. like on my phone. I'll fool with it again when I go out on the road. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? I'll update when/ if i figure anything out!

As such I believe it's 100% dependent on the local radio stations and whether or not they provide the supporting data in their transmission.
I've been in some areas where it's active and other areas where it's not available.
