I'm in the market for a AWD XJ or maybe V8 S/C XJ and was wondering the differences regarding the rear of the front seats? I've seen some with tables, some that are flat, and some with this bulge. Is this an airbag of some sort?

 

As far i have been reading the bulges have speakers for 3D / Surround sound?

 

Ok, thanks I thought I read something about a speaker and/or to determine if the xj comes with massage seats. I'll be adding all the jags with this seat to my watchlist.

 

That bulge is simply a space holder for the models without the Meridian Reference Sound System. You could swap it out with the flat older model seat backs or one with the tray tables if you wanted to.

 

Aawww man 😞 I'm going to feel like I'm missing out on something now. I haven't came across a model with the reference package yet.

 

Mine has the bulges without the speakers. I thought I read somewhere that those bulges are there on the seats that have massage. Mine has massage.

 

I have massage, but no bulges...
Anybody opened seats with bulges?

 

I did see some jags with the flat seats having the massage function. Now I'm wondering if I get the seats with the bulge could I add my own speakers?

 

pretty sure every model after like 2012 has massage anyways, they were standard even in the base 2013's and R-Sport

 

No massage seats ever in the XJR. Not available. I was surprised as it comes with just about everything too?

Yes they call them R Sport Seats. Here is the section from the new product brief explaining the massage seat options.




And as far as I know only the real R's got those sport seats. They have a large R embossed into the leather.

Yes. I’ve opened them. The bulge has nothing to do with the massage option. Behind the bulge, are the plastic speaker mounts for the 3 speakers that are associated with Reference System. 2 mid range and the tweeter. The plastic mount shown in the picture is attached to the seat but are covered. The bulged seat backs started appearing on the 2014 model year XJs. If you have the Reference Sound System, there would be a bulged speaker grille. If you have one of the other sound systems, you don’t have the speakers in the seats and thus that area is covered by the leather bulge.

 

For the seats with the bulge without the speakers, do you know if the speaker wires are there for connection?

 

Yes. Wiring for the speakers are there. They run from the plastic mounts to underneath the seats into the seat module connector.
