Default Several Electrical Issues

Hi Jag Forum,

I got me a BY2010/MY2011 XJ-L Supercharged US Version on Copart. The car had a rear accident and I had to rebuilt the trunk, rear bumper and had to replace the rear wiring harness. Now I am facing several electrical issues. My assumption is that one of the control modules got damaged, since the electrical gremlins seem to entirely independent from each other. I have the following issues:

1. The panoramic roof shutter doesn't close. The pano roof itself works fine, but the shutter that is part of the interior trim and should move back/forth below the glass doesn't move. They are in an open state, when I press the close button, the rolls are moving and it makes the electric motor sound, but the shutter itself is stuck and doesn't move, like some pin is not picking it up somehow.

2. The electric trunk lid opens but doesn't close. I can open the electric trunk lid with the key, the button in the cockpit and the exterior button in the rear bumper mold. But when I press the button in the lid itself to close it, it doesn't do anything. Not even an electric noise, nothing. I have to manually close it with force.

3. The light control switch on the steering wheel only partially works. The turn signal sometimes work, sometimes doesn't, which looks like a short. The flashlight and the high-beam don't work at all. Regular low beam works fine.

4. The ambient light of the analog clock in the dashboard only turns on every now and then. Also has the symptoms of a short, rather than a full malfunction.

While 1,2 and 4 are First-World problems, No. 3 is a real issue, because it doesn't pass the inspection and I can't get the registration.

I scanned the error codes and it threw me quite some. After deleting and re-scanning, only a few remained. The ones remaining seem to be random less important things, like communication to bus, which could be due to the low battery. For No. 3 above however it throws an interesting error: Turn signal switch connection circuit and Headlamp flash switch.

If No. 3 would be my only issue I would say, yes sure, there is my issue and I would go for the switch replacement. But given all the other electrical gremlins that seem entirely unrelated to each other to me, I'm sceptical. I mean, what does the light switch have to do with the roof shutter, the trunk lid, the ambi-light etc.? The are not even in the same category, like: Lighting, or Locking system etc. They are all unrelated in my eyes.

Since the crash happened in the rear and severaly damaged the rear, where all the important control modules are placed I somehow think that one of the modules got damaged. But I don't want to replace all of them just because of a suspicion. Do you guys know if all the above mentioned components have one single control module in common? Or do they all have different modules and thus it's unlikely that a module is damaged?

The wiring harness I replaced 1:1 btw. I checked the part number on the old damaged one and replaced it with the exact same part number from a donor car from a junkyard in Illionois.

Please find attached the error-code extracts pre and post clearing. I also attached some pictures of the pre-repair state. You can see that the wiring harness was completely cut and and had shorts. Also the wheel mould where the modules are is pretty dented and the modules got pressure.
VIN in case of need: SAJWA2GE1BMV16384.

Let me know in case you need any further details, or videos/pictures of the symptoms. Happy to share them here.

P.S. I forgot to report another thing that might hint at a broken control module. When I have the light switch on auto, the car sometimes turns on the lights when my German Shepherd barks next to the car very loud. Last week it did it again and this time even the anti theft alarm went off and bothered the neigbors. So it seems that from the vibrations of the barking something got contact in the modules that shouldn't have contact.

Thanks a lot for your support!

Cheers
Phil

Hi,

1. Panoramic roof motor have plastic gearing. These have been reported to fail and there are threads on this forum how to fix them.
2. In high change the button on trunk lid have been failed. Seen it happened and replaced / fixed one by chancing a switch. (very easy job)
3. Light stalk known failing. Just order new 2nd hand stalk from ovoko, eBay etc. Another easy fix.
4. Propably just a poor connection behind of clock. (clock itself is high quality)

The failures dosent sound any control module issues. Just normal wear and tear of any vehicle.
