What is your current plan for applying this product? From my understanding and how I have used it, it needs to be applied directly to bare metal. Has the new roof already been reinstalled in the car?

You will love this product and the issue will never come back! When I was redoing my 55 chevy I used this product on new panels and heavily rust pitted panels that interior would eventually cover. I would roll the car out of the shop regularly and would be left outside for days to weeks in the rain and humidity with no windows or doors on it and nothing coated in that paint ever bubbled or rusted. The product I used was much older from the company and eventually faded from gloss black to grey in sun but the new products now are much better from that perspective. I have used the newer stuff on fences, gates, and carports with outstanding results!! If you get this on your car you will not be disappointed!!

Lastly the brake caliper paint kit is also amazing! when your done the product looks like the calipers were powder coated!

 

I just replaced the roof with a donor from Florida ( 2014 MY ). It's perfect, no rust ( I guess because of the climate ), but I want to make sure this problem does not appear in the nearest future, so I bought it and as soon as it arrives I am planning to use it on the sunroof pod ( the one that gets rusty ). I really hope I won't spoil anything and the rust will never come back again. Worth a try thought, it was < 20 euros.

 

When you go back to the shop can you ask the techs how the panels I marked in your picture come off?? I will be vinyl wrapping my car soon and I would like to remove these panels to get better coverage with the vinyl.

 

Sorry for taking it that long to respond, I missed your reply. They took it out when taking the roof apart with a special jigsaw, but of course I forgot to ask how those parts were taking out in particular.
I think the dealership might now exactly.

 

I also found small rust blisters in the sunroof channels. My mechanic / Jaguar expert cleaned this up but warned me it could be worse under the glass panel directly above the top of the windscreen. He pumped urethane into the areas he could reach without removing the said glass panel, but a few weeks later, I noticed water marks on the front left pillar (inside the car). So, back to Jaguar Workshop (a very good Jag specialist here in Auckland New Zealand) and was advised the front glass panel would have to be removed. On doing so, the extent of the rust damage was rather depressing to say the least. The sunroof frame was pretty corroded and Jeremy had to fabricate new corners that would eventually be resealed to the car body.
As he was unable to ascertain the integrity of the remainder of the sunroof frame, we decided the best option was to take the whole thing out, clean up everything and reseal it all back in - better than what the manufacturer did in the first place.
As a long-standing Jaguar owner, I am very disappointed at this shoddy installation of the sunroof. The painting of where the steel sits on the aluminum is sub-standard as are the seals. Not good enough for this brand. I have opted to have the whole thing re-done as I intend to keep the car, and know it has been done properly. I sincerely hope that Jaguar rectifies this appalling 'fault' as I would seriously consider buying another luxury brand if they don't. My previous XJ didn't have a sunroof, which is my preference in cars - just another place for water to sit and do its mischief. To all the other owners of this XJ model, if you see rust appearing, chances are it's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Get it checked out thoroughly.

I have an XJ with similar problems (though not as bad as some of the examples in here, to be honest). I intend to sand it off, apply some rust cure & then hand paint it matt black. Then cover with plastidip or similar. My question is - how difficult is it to take the glass off the mechanism ? Than ks in advance.

You don't need take the glass off to do it...

Yes 2010-2012 only.

 

Just thinking if it's straight forward to take the glass off it will be easier to get into the channels to do a proper preparation.

 

It's a Jaguar. Nothing is straightforward!

 

I took the car to a local (very good ) body shop & they asked me to bring it back a couple of days later when their "glass removal expert " was available. I showed him some of the posts and pictures from this page and he definitley preferred to take the glass off. So his "glass man" was there next time and they are going to take the glass off & take it all down to the bare metal , treat the channels etc. & spray. 150 pounds . I will send photos some time after 20th November. Car is completley unmarked except for this - it's quite annoying!

How did you remove the sunroof assembly? Does the whole assembly remove from the top. Or do you need to take the opening panel out first?

 

Sorry, I wasn't there when they removed it so I'm not sure how it was done. I haven't posted amy pictures as he had smeared it with a vaseline-type product for increased protection but it was clear all the rust was gone. It was only the glass he was lifting out.
