threading bottom of 2014 XJ water pump into hard plastic hose end
Is there any magic trick to threading the water pump into the conical hard plastic hose connector, please? I have it lubed with coolant. I am aligning the front and back tabs in the metal with the notches in the hard plastic hose end connector.
Do you have to take the hose end connector off and fit it to the water pump?
There is a metal clip that slides into the hose connector. This retains it on the water pump and it needs to be backed off into the service position before pressing the fitting onto the water pump.

Best regards,
What conical hard plastic hose connector are you asking about?
I've done a few of these water pumps, but I can't figure out which connections you're talking about.
A picture would help a lot.
There is no easy way to remove the conical water pump bottom connection from the hard plastic hose sleeve. It is 20 minutres to an hour of gentle and maddening wiggling. Photograph how it is connected before you start.
To reinstall, you lube both sides generously with coolant, you then wiggle with strong pressure after aligning the notches on the water pump with the notches on the hose connector. It needs to be pushed in ALL the way in in order for the metal locking U-pin to have something to grip onto. Water pump protrusions must be completely flush with the top edge of the hose connection.
This is the least fun part of doing the whole cooling system upgrade.
See my other posting on how make the supercharger removal and reinstallation a walk in the park. There is no walk in the park for the above.
This is no problem anymore. I solved it. My posting update explains how to do it to anyone facing the same issue. If you are looking at a 2014 range XJ 3.0 water pump, it will be obvious. Thanks, Bo
Having done 2 water pump jobs, I still don't know which "conical hard plastic pipe" you are talking about. Is it the outlet pipe on the rear of the pump to the oil cooler? All the other water pump connections are stiff, but flexible, rubber. I used a quick spray of WD40 silicon lubricant on the inside of the hoses and they slipped on quite easily.
Ahh, okay. The QD connector on the end of the hose(s).
I agree that they're hardly what I'd call "Quick Disconnect", since I've sometimes had to wiggle them back & forth (or even pry it) to get them off & on, and as you describe sometimes more than others, but they do come off & go on... eventually...
Sometimes I pull the retainer clip off until I get it off because it's easily bumped off of the disengaged position by accident.

OK thanks for the picture. It's true that one picture can replace a 1000 words. I never had any problems? Lube the O-ring as posted above? These are common connectors and are used in multiple places on the engine. But yes all coolant hoses are a bit of a struggle. On this one removing the air intake tube and the air box on that side of the engine (Drivers side) helped a lot.
I "hope" you did not try to jam that over the WP fitting without FIRST pulling back the metal wire retainer? Because I don't think that will work at all? It was not clear from your posts?
I do like these connectors because of the O-ring seal and how positive that wire retainer holds the connection together. Never had one leak yet.
One thing to note is there are 2 identical water temperature sensors on these engines. One on the rear water manifold which is well known. The other one goes in that hose assembly.
You must have a non-JLR hose assembly? I ask because JLR has these bright yellow clips in position so you just release them after installation. Kinda neat and very fast.
Here is what mine looked like. I managed to poke a hole in one of the transmission cooler lines (The small diameter rubber hose) during an AC compressor change out. Had to buy this octopus thing as the individual hoses are not available. Note the temperature sensor also came with it and here is the part number if anyone is looking for one.
