Trying to Make 2 Keys for XJL
What's up guys, Just need a little help. I just purchased a XJL Portfolio from an Insurance auction but they didn't have the keys so I have no key what so ever for it. I'm trying to see if I can use SDD to make 2 new Keys even if I can't put the car into the on position. And I do not want to go to a locksmith as the cheapest quote I got was $700 for 2 keys. I already have a dedicated Laptop I use strictly for vehicle programing through ForScan and VCDs. I also ordered a DA Adapter and have a Power Supply rated 12V 20A with adjustable voltage.
The actual fobs are relatively cheap, under $25 each off eBay/Amazon etc. The expensive bit is the programming. However, if you know your way around SDD, it shouldn't be a problem.
From my understanding (I haven't done this myself), you clear out the old keys, and then update the new key fobs to the KVM.
What you won't have using this method, is anyway of opening the door using the metal key in the event of a total battery failure etc.
Good luck!

With no car information it's hard to say. Always supply year, power train and mileage when asking questions. Where you at too. Remember help us to help you!
The reason is many XJ's were sold around the world with Diesel engines. But the US never got any of those. We have numerous people posting without car details only to find out they are not in the US and have a Diesel version.
SDD wants a minimum of a 50A supply! Also note it's not just the amperage rating. The power supply must have a ripple rating below a certain number. If the unit your using has no ripple measurement then it's inadequate for use with SDD. The one you list is WAY too small! I have measured 30+ amp draws for hours at a time while using SDD. It is amazing the car can draw that much power while doing diagnostics.
See attached Jaguar Documents. This is the single biggest mistake all us DIY guys commit! Everyone including me started out trying to use battery chargers. DC power supplies for SDD are NOT battery chargers!
Also note the amperage requirements are getting bigger and bigger with the newer cars.

Without a key, there is no way to power on the car to get SDD connected. $700 for two keys is not terrible, if they are doing both the fobs and the blades. You could ask for a quote to do just one key, then do the second fob yourself with SDD. It also would not hurt to ask your local dealer for a quote on one or two keys, as they should be able to make it based off of your VIN and you would be sure it's done correctly.
I only had one complete key with my car when I got it, the second one was just the fob and it was in poor shape. I bought a Jaguar fob off of eBay for $15, a key blank for $8, and had a local locksmith duplicate my existing key blade to the blank for $25. I paired the fob using SDD, it is relatively straightforward once you get past the quirks of SDD in general. So, it can be done relatively cheap if you are willing to do the legwork.

I already inquired and Jaguar wants $458+$224 for one Key and they said they will not sell just 1 key. I'd have to get 2 bring total to $915.81 and the car would have to be towed to them to program.

You can definitely talk to the ECU through OBDII without turning on the vehicle. I do it all the time.
It doesn't matter, you don't want to go down a rabbit

Right but without turning on the ignition how can SDD read the VIN?
Or do you proceed without reading the VIN?
Does that power supply have a ripple/noise rating? SDD wants <50mv rms ripple.
