I would need to study them as there have been a good number of changes to the tablets since I installed mine several years ago. Hard to believe I started this thread in 2018! Especially the Android operating system and now they come with much larger memory and storage as well as much faster processors. My complaints are the slow booting which is not bad but you do have to wait a bit. The second is the screen could be better in direct sunlight.

They have a number of different screen options in the software and I have been thru all of them but still the old factory small screen did have better readability in direct sun light.

Not much of an answer I know!
I will say that this was my biggest purchase thru AliExpress which I was worried about but it all went well and I have no problems to report on that end.

Hi, I appreciate all this info. There's a lot, haha. So what's the modern solution to keep my 2017 XJL's OEM stuff (like the 360 degree parking cameras) and be able to use Apple Carplay? It looks like the "full Tesla" solution isn't really what I'd want.

I just installed an Android 11 head unit after reading through this thread and seeing everyone’s experience with them. I understand that the boot-up time was a concern. Version 11, has almost no boot-up time! 5 seconds after the car has been sitting all night. Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and screen mirroring is pretty cool too. Additionally, it has an option to use the Pivi Pro screen style. It looks nice but there are some spelling errors. In the first tri-fold, “online” is spelled wrong and the middle fold says “music info unknow”. The last tri-fold has a Range Rover in the picture. See the picture below. As such, I use the older layout style. There are some negatives but the positives outweigh them. Has anyone ever attempted to correct spelling errors or poorly translated English on these units? Is it possible? Thanks.

Finally! A model with quick boot up. This is one of the models where you swap out the boards from the OEM to the Android head unit, right? So you can keep all the OEM functions?

Yes Sir. I had to insert the two circuit boards from the original factory screen. I still have all OEM functions. The boot up is instant.

I purchased it from a company named 4x4 Shop CA. It’s a company that is located in Canada. You should be able to Google them. I came across their videos on You Tube. I went them because they appear to have experience with installing these screens in all make and model vehicles. Make no mistake that the screen will still be shipped from overseas though.

What I like about their site is that they allow you to customize your Android head unit. I added the blue anti-glare screen and an additional USB port. The screen came with those additions already installed. I’m glad that I didn’t have to attempt to install that anti-glare screen. You can add front and rear cameras, rear tv screens, dash cams, USB extensions etc. I have only used the screen for a week. So far, so good though. It’s definitely an upgrade from the stock OEM screen.

Is this the kind of head unit that allows you to "go back" to the original functionality as needed? I saw earlier in the thread someone had something like that.

What’s up Clubairth1!? I’ve been following from a distance. You’ve been a huge contributor to many threads.

Updating to V11? I’m not sure. My initial guess would be that it is possible. V11 is not the newest version though. I’m pretty sure that they are on 13 now. You’ve had your unit for well over a year now correct? These things have come down significantly since this thread was started. They were $800-900 plus. You can probably find them for less than $500 now. I think the only difference in the price is the technical support and/or warranty that you get after the purchase. It might be worth it to buy a new one if you can find a good deal.

Yes. You have to swap the circuit boards from the OEM unit to the Android unit. As such, you will retain all factory functions.

My Android is over 3 years old so may not be able to update the OS to V11?
I will need to research that some to.

Purchased! Do I have to buy a new front plate for the screen/AC area because I have the 8.5"?

What was the selling point for you? Did they mention anything about updating to newer Android versions? You won’t have to buy any additional trim. Everything will fit into place.

If you mainly just want to use CarPlay, does it make much of a difference what Android version is loaded? I see these aftermarket units with all different versions, but I think they are all behind the latest version available.

Yeah I'm more interested if total functuonality is achieved and if everything is working. And the sound quality is it still the same aux people are complaining about.

No back up camera is a big issue when you are used to having it in your vehicles. The navigation was also too outdated to be useful, and my attempt at updating ended in a non-working navigation. So upgrading to an Android system was the logical solution, as I had installed Android head units in all my other cars with the exception of the XF I owned before. This will be the third Android head unit I have installed in this XJL. The first two were the smaller style, that required removing two circuit boards from the OEM head unit and installing into the Android head unit, which enables you to keep all of the OEM functions.

This is the Tesla style head unit installed in the XJL, with the app Car Launcher Pro used as my launcher. Lots of different themes available from Car Launcher. I am using the leather theme here.

This is just an example with what I meant about Car Launcher Pro looking different with the larger Tesla style unit. This is how the leather and similar themes will look on smaller screens.
Can you give me any information on how to get audio. I'm clearly missing something. Check out the videos
