Upgrade Exhaust System for 2012 Jag XJL
Hello,
I am curious as to who has updated their exhaust system on a X351 frame with the 5.0 liter engine? I cannot find any type of updated exhaust system sold in America. I am hoping that someone can share what they use to update their exhaust system? What type of muffler did you use? I would like to have a bit more rumble in my pipes but not loud.
Will the X350 rear exhaust fit on the X351?
I welcome any thoughts on this.

GreenGator71, there is a reason why you are not finding many aftermarket exhaust systems, the factory one is about as good as it gets. If you are looking for a little more rumble, I would say to talk with a local exhaust shop and have them remove one of the resonators. That should do what you are after. Minagallery.com used to sell an aftermarket exhaust system. But, looking, I do not see it on their site any more.
From my experience of playing with exhaust systems, I would say for the Jag, you could probably get what you are after with a 70 series muffler on each side. That will give you a little bit more rumble/noise at idle, but when you step on the gas, it will let you know that there is something more there. You will need to be careful if you try and do dual 2.5" exhaust by also deleting the resonators and going with a 50 series muffler. This may drop the back pressure a little too far for a naturally aspirated 5.0L motor. You will know because the motor will lose some of its low end grunt. Sure, up at 5000+ RPM you will have more power. But, where do you spend more of your time, 2,000 RPM or 5,000? If you are supercharged, well, then this is not as significant of an effect because of the supercharger. I would say to start looking at Youtube and seeing what videos you can find. That way you can get an idea of the sound and most will post what they installed.

Here’s my 2015 XJR L cold start and warm start.
I’ve basically done a muffler delete. The factory resonators are still in place. This was all strictly for a “sound test” if you will. Believe it or not, cruising around town and freeway driving is perfectly pleasant. While you can hear the exhaust - as it does have some volume, it’s not overbearing. There’s no drone inside (no extra sound deadening material over factory) and you can still listen to the radio at low volume and carry a normal conversation.
The plan is to get VAP 200Cel Cats, an X pipe right off the collectors, then dual stainless 2.5” back to nothing but Magnaflow 11216 mufflers on each side. While I don’t mind the no muffler volume and the sound is decent - I’m looking for a more blended and balanced tone. With no mufflers you can hear the individual exhaust pulses and I want a different sound.
40° over night cool off cold start. MUCH more raspy, poppy and violent than a warm start.
Middle 50’s, warm engine, warm start.

Here's mine with an X-pipe in place of the resonator and Borla XS mufflers

Your set up is simply both resonators removed, X pipe in their place and XS mufflers? I really like the blended tone. Do you happen to have any other videos????
This guy has, in my opinion, the best exhaust I’ve heard on an XJ. I wish I could talk to him. From the video description it’s resonators deleted, X pipe and Borla mufflers - Pro XS apparently but sounds much different to yours.

I would be careful about deleting the rear cans (often thought of as resonators) because on the x351 they are actually the main mufflers and diffure a pesky standing wave;
Historically (over a hundred cars) Magnaflows do not work well at the very back of the system
You can delete the two, smaller cans forward of the rear axle for a *little* improvement, 200 cell cats will provide more growl
The older x350 cars were brilliant to muffler delete, leaving only the rear resonators (which were striaght-thru)
Noticeably more power, better mileage, and a lovely note 😁

I'll make a new video as well.
I just checked. Both resonators deleted. X-pipe in between. Borla XS mufflers. Porsche 997 tips.

I have know idea I don't know if this is possible or not;
Take the exhaust off an F-Type with the switchable "active exhaust', and fit it into the standard exhaust?
The "Pop, Bang, Shout...**** off your neighbor mode" is selectable on the F-Type.

Yes. I know there would be some pipe-work mods.

I pretty much have straight pipes at the moment and it only pops and bangs when the engine is still cold. After it warms up it goes away. I’m not sure how they did it on the F type but I know on sportbikes, you have to put fuel and air into the exhaust stream. I’m sure it’s special tuning Jag has done to get that affect.
So yes it's part of the ECU tune.
Around 2016 then again around 2020 JLR toned down the F-Type pops and bangs a fair bit, especially on the later revision, so as to pass ever more swingeing drive-by noise regulations. Also because the unburnt fuel was causing premature failure of the cat converters which was costing JLR a pretty penny in warranty replacements.
Bottom line - no way to fully replicate the early F-Type pops and bangs on an XJ without spending a shedload of cash, even if it was possible.
All that said, from my experience of fiddling around with the exhaust system on my old 2010 XFR you can get somewhat close to F-Type pops and bangs by freeing up the exhaust system, especially by swapping out the rear mufflers for small straight through hi-flow mufflers.
But that comes with a big downside - horrendous drone.
The F-Type pops and bangs are created by injecting some fuel on the exhaust stroke which then detonates in the exhaust pipes, but only on the over-run.

Does anyone have a pic of the underside of a 2016 or similar XRJ. I have only seen mine briefly once and want to do an x-pipe and maybe some mufflers. I thought there was a suitcase looking one in the center roughly under the front seats, I think that should be removed and the x-pipe placed there. Those that have put an x-pipe, did you buy a premade that fits there of have one made?
Thanks
