Default What and would you pay?

First off: This is NOT a for sale post.

So, I have the opportunity to buy my friend's 2016 XJL 3.0awd. She's got 173,xxx miles, and has been enthusiast, but not professionally maintained since 2019. Has been a daily driver in that time (and I would use her as such). No major body issues (some superficial scratches and scuffs, and two spots of bubble). Tires and brakes all good. Definitely hasn't been babied, but most certainly not abused. Currently needs a water pump and new keys (can drive with the wonky key, it just misbehaves; we have the water pump and the the little aluminum pipe). Also needs the backup camera (we have a new camera, but haven’t 100% ruled the camera itself as the issue).

I'm not sure really what to say about her other than *I believe* she is in quite good condition for a gal of her age/experience.

What I am looking for is if y'all, with more experience than I, would tell me what I should be thinking about, specifically asking about and what you'd feel a fair price to be.

*** also important to say that I will be able to do all upkeep and repair, potentially even reprogramming.

3.0 V6 or 5.0 V8? I wouldn't pay more than $6K. That's a lot of miles, the water pump job is expensive (you should replace all the plastic cooling components when doing this job) and these cars aren't worth much on the used market anyways.

Can't help with the price but your approaching this correctly since it does have 173K miles on it!
If you can DIY and are willing to then it's up to you to offer a price you can live with. But it has little to no value as a car with 173K on it so a low price at best. I doubt your friend will have many IF any other offers.

No dealer will even look at anything over 100K miles. It's an auction car at this point.

Pipe or pipes? There's more than one you need to replace to be safe.

All the above points are good ones . While you may think that you can DIY, there will be things that go wrong that you won't be able to fix yourself, , or you won't be able to find the part, or the part is very expensive, or you will need to buy a special tool to fix it. Those are all things that prospective buyers overlook. My 2012 XJL NA is
is perfect running condition with only 67k miles, it looks like new inside and out, always maintained professionally, yet, for a trade in its only about $5-6G, Personally,
I would wait for a lower mileage one to come around, or give him 3g at most. Sorry , if I dampened your spirits but be wise.

That's a very good point and that's the thing - what's it worth to you as the potential buyer?
Keep in mind that any trade-in value will ALWAYS be a good bit lower than the sale price for several obvious reasons.
So while $3k - $6k may be what a used car salesman offers for trade in, the owner could ask what they want & negotiate from there, as long as they state that's what they're asking.
So you can offer what ever you feel it's reasonably worth - what you are comfortable paying as it is.
