Default XJ cooled seats

Hi guys,

My wife is thinking of replacing her 2002 S Type with an XJ MY 2012-2014. Just looking on the internet right now. We see references to cooled seats or ventilated seats. Would someone please explain what they are and how they work. Are they problematic?

Thanks in advance!

They blow chilled air (lightly) through the perforated seat. You can select 3 levels of cooling. It’s great on a hot day. Feels like you’re wearing an icy hot patch on your bottom. Mine is problem-free.

As an owner of a 2010, it sounds like quite a few quirks were settled in the later years (2013/2014). I understand that the updated transmission, tensioners, sunroof, supercharger isolator, and infotainment module should all be in the 2014 and maybe even in the 2013. Someone with those model years would have to chime in to be sure though. The 2012 and earlier years will have fewer of these updated parts (if they had them replaced, for example). So I would recommend a later model.

All the best,

Yes, the first big changes happened in 2013. Revised spring/damping rates, 8 speed transmission, Meridian Audio including faster touchscreen response, ECO Stop/Start to mention a few. IMHO I would look at nothing older than a 2013.

Sorry, the supercharger isolator springs apparently weren’t updated till 2015. So if you get a supercharged version, they will still have the older type unless they were replaced already.

Still though the 2013/2014 is the better way to go.

To answer your original question.

Yes Jaguar has AC seats. Many other cars will have ventilated seats which are completely different. They only blow air thru the upholstery.

The Jag seats are not air conditioned in the traditional sense - they use a peltier cooler built into each individual seat to cool normal cabin air that is sucked in through a little vent under the seat base at the front. In common use "AC seats" works just fine, but the system is very simple so no need to be afraid of it breaking down. Replacement cooler modules can be had on eBay/AliExpress for about $5 and are easily switched over. Replacement control modules are about £130 but are widely available used for much less.

For a bit more trivia?
The seat filters are exactly the same as most Ford ones. SHO or F150 so if you need one they are dead common and cheap.
Jaguar/Ford has apparently removed the filter material in the later models so you no longer need to service them.

While the basic system is very reliable we have had a good number of people suffer from collapsed and crushed duct work. The plastic is very thin and can get brittle and shatter. We have had several good repair threads on how to fix this. Usually no cost just time to take the seat apart to get at the duct and tape it up. As you can imagine they are buried in the seat back. One of the indications of duct problems is the AC seats turn off in a short time. Without airflow the system will shut off to save the Peltier devices. These work exactly the same as RV refrigerators if you happen to be a camper. Nice because there is no refrigerant and you only are moving air.

Thanks for the advice. We're really looking at the 3.0 AWD.

Thanks for the info. I do most of the work on my current S Type. Probably will also on what ever we get next.

Very interesting. I'm not familiar with this technology. It will give me something to investigate.

Thanks
