Question '08 XJR brake question

I had the pads and rotors on my '08 XJR changed at 30k. When I get >50k, I antcipate I may need to change the pads again. I have noticed that the rear pads wear out faster than the front pads. Is it always neccassry to replace the rotors when replacing the pads? I have a Chilton European Service Manual 2004 edition which happens to cover the '04 XJR. Are the brake system/design on the '04 XJR the same as it is on the '08 XJR? If it is, can I sucessfully do the brake work described in the 2004 manual on my '08 XJR?

Provided the disc surfaces are OK, it is definitely not necessary to replace the discs if the pads are worn, except if the discs are on or near their wear limits. A disc thickness value is defined in the technical data for the car, and when replacing pads, the mechanic should measure disc thickness too, to assess whether to replace discs or not. As the next service is 10k miles away, this is a matter of judgement.

As for rears wearing out before the fronts, the reason is the car uses these brakes as well as the driver ! There is no limited-slip diff on X350s, the brakes are used instead. We may not like it, but that's how it is !

The rotor's minimum thickness should be stamped on the rotor.

I'm very surprised to hear the rears wearing faster than the fronts. Doesn't happen on the S-Type and although they're different cars they do share a lot of engineering. Is it generally accepted that the rears do wear faster on these XJs?

It is called Dynamic Stability Control. Which frequently applies rear brakes on wet roads and on most starts and accelerations in the winter when the roads are slippery from one or more of cold surface, salt, snow, or ice. At 17,500 my front pads were good and my rears were .02".

New discs are 30mm wide and the minimum is 28mm so they allow 1mm wear on each

side. That is a joke IMO.

Hi Chris,

There's no reason to rely on a Chilton manual when you can have the official Jaguar Workshop Manual instead. You can download the Workshop Manual in six sections at the links below, as well as the 2008 Electrical Guide and the Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog. As far as I know, any mechanical differences between the '08 and '04 X350 are minor.

X350 Workshop Manual:

Search this thread for downloading and installing the EPC on your computer so you can view parts diagrams and part numbers:
