2001 XJ8 Cabin Filter
Just changed it on my '04 and it was pretty easy. Setting the filter into its frame and then making sure all the bottom clips connect was the only halfway difficult part. Takes about 5 minutes to do it correct.
Best price I found on the filter was actually at the dealer!

Frank F, first off you're in the X350 section (04 XJ's and newer) so might get a better reponse in the X308 (98 to 03 XJ section). Your car is a X308 series.
The X308's have a permanent type cabin air filter which is not designed to be removed and replaced on a regular basis. The filter is under the dash and part of the heater/Ac matrix. The part alone is about $240 for the filter and probably 4 hours labor to replace.

Standing at front of the car, looking at the engine, it's on the passenger side under the cowl cover. You see a 10" wide cutout in the vinyl with two latches. Those pop open and you'll see the cabin filter. Kind of press down and toward the front of the car, the cabin filter frame will pop out with the filter.
Clean the area out with a shop vac if you have one and make sure the filter is in the frame good and when you put it back, it catches on the mounting points.
The driver's side, I think it is fuses... Good luck
