Default 2004 XJ8: Manually Locking Trunk with Key on Dead Battery

Hi guys,

I feel a little stupid, and I'm sure there is an easy answer, but the battery died on my 2004 XJ8 and having determined that the battery was located in the trunk, I figured out how to open the trunk manually to inspect the battery. Having done that, I was called away, so attempted to lock the trunk manually, assuming that a left/counterclockwise turn of the key would lock it. It did not. So now I am left with a trunk that is not locked. Can anyone give me any insight into how I manually lock the trunk with a dead battery? Cheers!

Andy

Maybe you can't.
I mean maybe that you can only unlock manually with a dead battery.
Does the lid shut and stay shut?

Thanks for the reply meirion1. I think you may be right. Perhaps the key lock on the trunk is for use only to access the trunk for the purpose of replacing the battery. The trunk did not close properly when opened with the key as there was no mechanism (as far as I could tell) to lock the trunk with the key. Once I replaced the battery the trunk returned to locking/unlocking without the key exactly as expected.
