Default 2004 XJ8/VDP Power Steering

I have recently noticed that when i take a corner hard/fast that my steering has like a "shimmy" to it... nothing like i have felt in any other car.. For instance, if i go into a caldusac and nail the gas or make a u-turn and hit the gas it kind of shakes in my hand..... What the heck is wrong here?

Also, i'm having the problem i've read about here in the forum on a few posts.... A slight "scratching" sound behind the dash, but it only does that after i drive 60+ miles on the highway and start into the neighborhood... Sounds like i need that additive for this problem, right?

Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Yes mine does it, but not necessarily on a hard turn. It does it on tight turns when I am moving the wheel at a moderate to fast pace. I am trying to replace the fluid hoping that will fix it!

Well, it turns out mine is still doing the same thing! Has gotten worse with warmer weather.

Default "Lube Gard power steering protectant"

I have tried everything but replacing the pump to stop mine and the stuff above seems to have finally rid 95% of the problem.
I got it from Nappa.

Are you sure this is going to work? I didn't have this power steering stumble until you suggested I try Lucas Oil Stop Leak Power Steering Additive!

Horrible stuff in cold weather.

It thickens too much, and the next thing you know, you've blown the seals on the PS pump.

Do they know it happens? Well, the distributor paid out to replace the pump without too much prodding.

Hmmm... I only had that stuff in the car for maybe a couple thousand miles, so hopefully it's OK.

The LubeGard is a very small amount, it is light and clear.
Worked for me anyways.

When you say it worked 95%, exactly what does that mean?

Hmmm... the NAPA by my office has it. I will pick it up. I also have a thing of the Jaguar PAS additive fluid, and was thinking of putting that in, but I've done that once already.

I did the Jag add twice and it came back, I did suck out as much fluid as poss and replace with the Mobil Snthetic that ppl on here recco, then I put the Lube Gard in, not a squeek in some time.
PS
Napa has a really cool sucker that works so much better than the turkey baster and it has a narrow tube that gets deeper into the pump resevoir.
Talking of squeeks some mice took a fancy to my under hood sound matting and had a feast.

95 % means that if you listen like crazy there is a few secs on cold start but again I am probably being super picky; it really seems ok now.

So I gather nobody has ever solved the power steering shuddering/stuttering since the beginning of time?

Well since nobody knows how to solve this by using additives, does anyone have any idea how to replace the power steering pump?

OK, I decided to try the LubeGard PS Protectant that DB6 recommended. It seems to have calmed the stumbling/chattering power steering quite a bit. But it's still there. I will give it a couple weeks and let you know whether or not it has improved.

It seems it's much worse in warm weather, and it is very hot now. So this should be a good test to see if this actually works.

Well, it doesn't seemed to have helped much, if it has helped at all. I'll give it another couple weeks before I attempt something else.

Well, the LubeGard seemed to make it worse, or at least not improve it at all. On Saturday, I decided to go ahead and try another course of the PAS additive fluid from Jaguar.

It seems as though it has made a big difference. Whereas it seemed to be worst on hot days, I drove it on 90+ degree days without having the stumbling vibration nearly as much, although on occasion, I would get it really bad in a parking lot. I will give it a couple weeks to see what happens.

Please let me know if I should stop updating this thread and just keep my findings to myself!

Alan,
It really is odd.
I had no long term luck with the Jag additive, the "lubeguard", (sounds like a personal sex jelly), appears to be doing it's job in my car.
A high temp here is 70.
By the way, the skull and crossbones label on that Jaguar additive is there for a reason, that mixture is really nasty and caustic, so handle with care; and .....
oh yeah...MAKE SURE YOU PUT IT IN THE POWER STEERING RES AND NOT THE BRAKE RES like some dope I know did.

Have you tried a *full* flush and bleed? Not a partial exchange. But, a full flush.

It gets worse on hot days ... have you hosed off the ps cooling radiator?

The "chuckle" could be air bubbles/foaming during high demand that is exacerbated by heat. There is surprisingly little fluid in a ps system.
