Thanks for the answer.
But why is disconnection of the battery that important for such a work?

Yes. Trust me. I found out the hard way the first time I lifted the car.

If you don't disconnect the battery, the car detects the jacking and puts the car in Jacking Mode, which is basically letting all the air out of the air shocks. When that happens, it's unlikely you'll be able to get the jacks out from under the car once you let it down from the jack stands.

For nearly every procedure on these cars, the first thing the workshop manual says is 'disconnect the battery'

Thanks a lot for the reminder!

There are specific floor jack and jack stand points for the x350. In getting to the cable bracket to secure/replace the 8mm bolts, either side should be adequate to gain access. It's easily found just under the tranny on driver's side of tunnel.

I just undertook to access the famous bolts.
Fortunately they were both here and tightly fastened.

The bad point is that I may have a failing solenoid below the console.
For the time being, my shifter shifts correctly.
To be followed-up...

Not necessarily. It could be something simple like a poor ground/earth contact, the brake pedal switch, a wiring or connector problem.

BTW paydase,

Have you pulled the DTC's? That might point you in the right direction.

No, good point.
The grounds in the boot looked perfect.
A week ago I had only DTCs (fuel sensors, fuel pressure too low) probably triggered by a failing battery.
The shifter issue arrived since then.
Yes, it could be something else.
I'll do that.

paydase, did you ever figure out what your issue was?
I just had my tranny lock in park. I was late so did what I had to do, and when I came out it shifted fine.
I drove it today and it was fine.
Brake switch maybe? what else keeps the shifter from coming out of Park?

Default Loose Bolt strikes again

My 2004 XJR just experienced this routine issue. Lost one bolt, and remaining bolt was loose. Easy fix from this help on the forum. Car was only disabled for about 30 minutes to jack up the car, but in new bolt and tighten second bolt. Surprising this happens at all, but easy enough fix if you know how to diagnose and match to this forum, thank goodness for this forum. I immediately checked my 2004 VDP and all tight... go figure, they must loosen randomly. New checklist item for me during oil changes is check linkage bolts!

All good and not much trouble with all the contributors to the forum! Thank You!

Sorry, I did not see your request at the time.
Hope you solved it.

In my case, the issue remains random, usually on cold start: I have to attempt several times shifting from P to R until it works.
I could not identify any code.
I did not want to reflash my TCM nor to disassembly the console or investigate the brake switch as I can live with it but it is sometimes annoying...

Default Thank you Thank you

This happened to my 2005 XJ8L in a grocery store parking lot, and I thought I was in for a major repair bill or at least a major inconvenience. I couldn’t believe it when I found this thread and then discovered a single bolt on the pavement under the car.

what a relief!

UPDATE: Not long after this posting my XJ morphed into the throttle body nightmare they experience when heat fatigue ruins the electric junctions to the ECU. That was the last straw for me. Sold her down country. Was the most beautiful ride I ever owned but the the love fades when she kept cheating! Good luck, gentlemen.
