Question 2007 Jaguar XJ8 Problems (35,000 miles)

First, I cannot get the navigation system to come on. It says I have the wrong DVD disc installed. There has never been a DVD in this car since I bought it.

Second, the engine light came on and was on for several days. Now it is off.

Third, the Bonnet Open warning message came on and is still on. I cannot close the bonnet.

Fourth, I am not able to lock the car doors with the remote. This may have started about the same time as the bonnet problem. How do I manual lock the doors and bonnet?

Fifth,, my air suspension went out sometime yesterday and I have a very ruff ride. I have a warning for this plus a warning the car is riding too low.

Before all this started I had a dead battery on two occasions and I had it jumped each time.

Would a new battery correct all of this? I am not sure how old my battery is and if it is weak,

My Jaguar mechanic has an Interstate battery he will install for me for $250. He says they are the best for Jaguars with their cranking power. I can get this same battery for $185 at the Interstate Battery Center. Are there other batteries that are just as good for Jaguars, but less expensive?

Please advise on what I am up against here. This car has 35,000 miles on it and is like new.

I use AGM batteries in all my cars. Mainly from Advance Auto. Some say they are not good for x350’s. Going on four years on one.

So how long have you owned this car ? Tell us a bit more. The issues you describe are about par for the course for a new owner of a used X350.
It is unlikely a new battery will cure all your faults. I have owned two of these cars and had all the faults you describe except the hood lock warning, (a fairly common fault BTW)

First, I cannot get the navigation system to come on. It says I have the wrong DVD disc installed. There has never been a DVD in this car since I bought it.
The sat nav facility is in the trunk LH side, where the CD player also resides. It may need a new disc and you can get them off the internet but the last year of update is 2012.
Second, the engine light came on and was on for several days. Now it is off.
You need to get the codes read. Whilst the light may have gone out, there should be some stored codes to give clues on what might be wrong and need attention
Third, the Bonnet Open warning message came on and is still on. I cannot close the bonnet.
The release cable is probably rusted-up and needs a new one installing, (don't try and fa*t-**** around with the old one, just replace it. At the same time lubricate the two latches
Fourth, I am not able to lock the car doors with the remote. This may have started about the same time as the bonnet problem. How do I manual lock the doors and bonnet?
You could need a new battery in the remote. The bonnet has no electric lock, just the cable-operated latches.
Fifth,, my air suspension went out sometime yesterday and I have a very ruff ride. I have a warning for this plus a warning the car is riding too low.
Again you need to read the codes. If the air compressor has failed, (or its relay), the car cannot be raised to the correct height. Alternatively, you have an air leak,
Before all this started I had a dead battery on two occasions and I had it jumped each time.

I purchased my 2007 Jaguar XJ8 in September 2019. I had a Jaguar mechanic go over it before I bought it. I paid just under $15,000 for it. It had about 34,000 miles on it. It looks new.

It seems unusual for all these things to go wrong about the same time.

Avoid a normal lead battery or an AGM, because the X350 electronics require an higher voltage to properly function for long times (numerous threads on the issue).
Best is to put a so-called silver-calcium battery.
In the US, I think the sole calcium batteries are from Exide.

This will fit your 2007 Jaguar XJ8 (edit)

Exide

SPRINTER MAX 12 volts Lead Acid 6-Cell H8/L5/49 Group Size 950 Cold Cranking Amps (BCI) Auto Battery

Technological information

Technological improvements of this new alloy include increased corrosion resistance, greater resistance to high temperatures, longer shelf life, longer life of use (mean 6 years), minimal self-discharge and as having the highest breakout.

Disadvantages

Silver calcium batteries generally require more charging voltage (14.4 to 14.8 V) and deteriorate rapidly in vehicles which do not provide the required voltage range. (Alternators) which never reach required voltage range will cause rapid sulfation due to battery never being charged fully. As a general rule, silver-calcium batteries should not be installed to vehicles or systems which are not specifically designed for silver calcium battery chemistry.[citation needed] This also may occur with static chargers, some of which fail to charge these batteries.

Fortunately my car never took a chemistry class or read your research. It has been doing wonderfully for the last 3.5 years on the Exide battery.

That one, if "silver calcium" is mentioned, and seems to be the same than the one used by joeleerj, yes.

The Exide Max 12 looks to be a standard lead acid battery. I looked and the Silver AGM in my XJR was installed in early 2015. Varta and Bosch sell calcium batteries.

Should I drive my Jaguar to the mechanic with a faulty suspension to have the codes read before I determine I need a new battery and have it replaced. In other words, will I lose the codes if the battery is replaced?

I cannot find a Varta or Bosch battery sold in OKC.
My Jaguar mechanic recommends the Interstate batteries for Jaguars.
There are two available for my Jaguar XK8. Which one would consider buying the AGM will more ACC powre or the non AGM battery?

https://www.interstatebatteries.com/...search-results

PREMIUM MTX-49 H8 36 months 900 ACC $232.95
Absorbed Glass-Mat (AGM)

BEST MTP-49 H8 30 months 730 CCA $185.95
Our best flooded, non-AGM battery

Most auto parts stores can read the generic Powertrain-related diagnostic trouble codes for free. Please write them all down exactly as they appear and post them here and we'll try to help.

If the bonnet will not latch, Fraser is probably correct about the cable. But if the bonnet seems to latch but you still get the warning message, the problem is probably the switch, which is mounted to the right of the radiator (when facing the engine bay). You can extinguish the warning by disconnecting the electrical harness, jumping the two terminals with a short piece of wire, large paper clip bent into a U, etc. Tape the jumper in place and your warning message should extinguish.

Resolving your Bonnet Open issue may restore proper remote door locking.

Resolving the air suspension issues will be difficult without knowing the proprietary Jaguar diagnostic trouble codes, which require a special scan tool to read. If you have a good independent shop in your area that services European vehicles, they may have an Autel or Launch scan tool or the Jaguar SDD system to read these codes.

Low battery voltage can cause many spurious DTCs, but won't usually trigger air suspension faults unless the battery becomes so depleted it can't start the car.

Interstate Batteries are made by Brookfield Business Partners (formerly Johnson Controls) and Exide, who, along with East Penn, manufacture virtually all of the auto batteries in North America (AutoZone, O'Reilly, NAPA, Advance, Sears DieHard, Walmart/Sam's, Costco, etc.) There's nothing special about an Interstate Battery, they're just marketed and supported really well by a great organization.

Cheers,

Don

The remote won't lock the car if any of the detectors for doors, trunk, hood, show 'open'. You should get a "toot" sound as well.

If you can afford $15,000.00 Jaguar, Do yourself a favor and purchase a code reader specific to Jaguar. A good reader cost merely $150.00. It paid for itself after one use. All issues you specified are typical to Jaguar. We can assist you once you identified error coded. The is an active thread fore recommended a scanner on going now in this forum.

When I replace the old battery with the new, is there anything special I need to do?

Could the air shocks come alive almost immediately?
