Anyone know if you can add the one tap, 3 blink, lane change function to the signal lights? 2004 XJR. Thx

Not many people ask for that particular feature. In fact, I'm still debating whether or not I even like the 3-blink minimum the newer cars are incorporating. I drive rental cars a few times a month, and I'm still on the fence as to whether I like this 'restriction' or not.

First of all, for it to be effective, drivers MUST ACTUALLY USE THEIR TURN SIGNAL. I honestly think drivers are being taught that this is an optional vehicle traffic law. Oh, and putting the turn signal on DURING the turn does not make up for not informing people behind you the required 1/2 block or 3 second rule of thumb (my ROT)

(deep breath) Yes, it's a pet peeve of mine to come upon someone to discover them slowing to make a turn w/o a blinker warning, and i'm forced to brake quicker than normal.

I'm sure it can be done, but not sure of the extent of the electrical modifications involved. WhiteXKR (over in the xk8-xkr and now an owner of the 07 XK) designs and sells custom electrical gadgets for us xk8-xkr owners, and if anyone would know, he would...or at the very least, the principle involved.

 

You mean I am not the only one that uses turn signals. Here in South Florida, there are thousands of cars with pristine turn signals that have never been used.

How hard is it to hold the lever for 2 secs. Have we become that lazy.

 

Apparently so Red. Most drivers just don't care anymore, and do as little as possible, break as many traffic laws as they can get away with. What irks me beyond belief are those that think they're time is more valuable than everyone else, and instead of waiting behind the line of cars in the dedicated left turn lane at a stop, they use the right lane and create a 2-lane synchronized turn onto a single-lane road. I am waiting for the day when someone tries that with me at the intersection so I can pin them to the side forcing them to the shoulder, watch them brake dramatically as I honk profusely, or hit my jag. I may regret this later, but that's my plan.

flick it on all the way and when done flick it off.

three flashes is not enough warning or time to get the job done

Oh, and oncoming those drivers who don't signal their intent to turn which would have created an opening for the driver waiting to get out into traffic? That's a selfish ploy to hold you still so that they have more room to turn themselves.

And finally what about those idiots who don't have a hand to spare for turn signals because it is already committed to the idiotphone?

 

Com'on guys I asked a simple question , I don't need a lecture on how to use signal lights. Plums 3 blinks is plenty of time to change lanes IMHO

Amusing !! Here in the UK, we have two basic driving faults with indicators, (apart from not using them at all !!): -

1. Signal after turning the steering wheel to make the turn= "yes, I do expect you to read my mind, but I'm just confirming you were correct"

2. Signal to join the motorway via the entry ramp, and immediately move in as if having the right-of-way, and everybody has to slow down or move out of the way = "I know my car is only little but I'm used to getting my way all the time"

I have seen people do this in front of 44 tonne trucks moving at 60 mph. No wonder we have accidents !!

 

Crappy drivers are everywhere.

Thanks Norri, I was hoping that a later model flasher relay or whatever they use, could be used. Does anyone know what year they added the feature to the XJ? I assume they have it now. Could not find anything on the XK board. I agree with everyones comment on improper signal use , I use mine even when I'm the only car on the road. I'm used to the 3 blink from my other vehicles especially when causually changing lanes or merging (without vehicles close by). My pet peeve is the red light left lane car (no left turn lane) that slowly advances when the light changes to green, stops, and then signals a left turn.

Forcing the car directly behind them to wait patiently for either the right lane to clear or the turn gets made. Lemme guess, that car left waiting is often you?

 

here in New Jersey an out of stater might get the impression that turn signals were against the law here.

Steve, thanks for the link...I was so fascinated by the 'intelligent' version of the blinking smart stop add-on, I bought one. I'm not sure which car to install it on, but I'm thinking the convertible since its so low to the ground, and could benefit most from the additional safety feature. I'll let you know if it works and how easy it was to install. BTW, never heard back from you on the front parking sensor trial...specifically regarding the test unit.

 

You'll love it.

After a stop or two in traffic, following drivers tend to hang back about double the normal distance.

Mine is attached only to the high mount center brake light and set to the 5 flash + solid mode. The wiring was spliced at the fuse box, and the unit is mounted to the side of the fusebox using the included double sided tape.

 

For you maybe, but what about the person you are signaling?

The only thing a 3 blink is good for is to be able to say that the signal was made in the accident report.

Why limit yourself to 3 blinks when 50 or 60 can be had for the same effort?

For all of you who find the lack of signalling to be cause for the red mist, don't ever think about driving over here. You really need to be clairvoyant.

The French seem quite incapable of indicating 'leaving' a roundabout (which, of course, they negotiate at the limit of tyre adhesion).
