60k miles
Hi I have a 2004 XJ8 that is just about to turn 60k. I was just wondering if the experienced members would suggest any issues/replacement parts that I should be thinking about when I take it for the service?
It did have a dealer service history including the 50k service and everything seemed to be in order then, although prior to my ownership. I have the paperwork and all the recalls etc have been done as far as I can tell.
My indie mechanic does not think we should change the tranny fluid but I am sure he would if I insisted. (sometimes the shift from one to two is a bit erky especially if I dither about on the accelerator) What about the belts etc?
Hopefully there isn't anything like the timing chain tensioner issues that I had with my first 1999 xk8 at almost exactly 60k!
Thanks in advance,
Alan

Alan, do a thorough check of transmission cooling lines up front near radiator where the crimps are between metal/rubber and the TCM harness sleeve on the back of the trans for leaks. Regardless, I would do a pan/fluid change and get T40 bolts and new sleeve installed to be on the safe side. Don't wait for 100K miles to change... No issues w/ tensioners on the 4.2 - Just my $0.02
I'd do all the fluids including the trans, brake, engine coolant, engine oil/filter, power steer, diff.
Im guessing like most the only fluids that have been changed to date is the engine oil
I's also guess the brake, power steer and engine coolant have only ever been topped up and the trans/diff has never been checked or replaced
Cheers

Apart from engine oil and filter, at this sort of mileage a tranny fluid and filter change is recommended, although it's not in the Jaguar service program. Brake fluid is nowadays normally checked for water content with a clever little electronic device and only replaced if over the threshold. The coolant has a very long life, but is probably worth a change if it's never been done before, as car is 10 years old. Diff and power steering fluids ? For me, no, I think more towards 100k for these.
There is also a fuel filter at some point, and checking of suspension and steering joints. The air spring lower bushes wear out quickly, so if not already replaced on yours, I'd say would be getting worn by now. Spark plugs are due at 70k miles or 7 years. The serpentine belts seem to last for ever, certainly up to 100k miles, but that's just my opinion.

Alan,
Do the trans fluid and pan (filter) per abonano, especially if you are getting jerky shifts. I did mine at 80K and was amazed how it transformed the shift quality and smoothness. I had a hard downshift into 1st that is all but gone. This sealed for life (warranty) junk is garbage as you no doubt know.
Cheers,
Jeff

+1 on fluids and filters, especially the transmission at that mileage.
DO the transmission fluid change, but not just the oil, buy the kit with the correct grade of oil and a replacement sump unit that comes c/w filter
Mine has done similar mileage, now just at 70k and both front and rear suspension bushes all done, so worth checking for sure.

And which tranny fluid? There appears to be an ongoing debate on that issue? MY 2004 XJR has 81K now and considering doing the transmission flush. Also considering replacing booster pump, yes its appears to be intermittant at times, then with coolant replacement
