Adaptive cruise retro-fit
Aside from other things you will need to add/replace hardware to cruise control box on right side of steering wheel: the ACC has a switch there that controls distance to vehicle ahead; traditional/old/dumb cruise control does not have one.
I hate adaptive cruise when it's on a car I'm renting for work travel. I do not want to slow down for slower traffic in my lane on the freeway, I want to overtake them. If I have to tap the brake until the adjacent lane is clear and then resume after the overtake, that's fine. One of the first things i do in a rental car is disable or minimize adaptive cruise, and I absolutely disable lane assist. I find it offensive that the car is telling me I don't know how to drive, and I am afraid of kids growing up dependent on these "driver aids" and never learning situational awareness while driving.
The only place I've found adaptive potentially useful is two-lane highways, where you are stuck behind someone if it's not clear to pass, but even then I prefer to maintain throttle control myself.

Try to keep in traffic in on highway in construction zone, where road marking remains!
But the nanny mode is persistent! in my wife's Subaru you can't turn off sounds of computerized nanny. You better learn it's beeperspeack.
Oh, boy! How did we survived riding bicycle without a helmet? or, for that matter, skiing? Do not count Sonny Bono: it would not help him!

And the only way we knew to come home was when the street lights came on!!
