Default Adding GPS System

I am looking at an '04 XJ8 that has almost all of the features I am looking for except the navigation system. How easy/expensive would it be to get one installed? Any recommendations? Thanks.

I suggest going with an aftermarket portable GPS (Tom Tom, Garmin, etc.) rather than trying to install an OME one. Less expensive, easier to upgrade maps and you can take it from car to car.

Just my thoughts,

it would be very expensive try $5k + and very time consuming, bottom line= if you want navigation ( i wouldnt buy one without it, esp for resale purposes) wait until you find one with it!

The buildin nav is not all that great. Can't find a simple POI like closest post office.

Also it costs a small fortune to upgrade the maps. Get a decent aftermarket unit and you will be much better off.

Go for the aftermarket one. I have a GPS in my XKR and it is only good for the clock. My Garmin is online updatable and I really like the fact that your destination can be programmed into it before you get to the car.

There is a lack of clarity in some of the information posted above.

I have no axe to grind, but the Nav DVD is $199 from Navteq. Not cheap but not exactly 'a small fortune' as suggested by veffremov.

Also hlgeorge says the nav in his XKR is only good for the clock, but bear in mind he doesn't have the Denso Nav fitted to most modern Jags, he has the older Alpine which is not great (assuming he is accurate in his tag line which states he has on 01 XKR).

The nav fitted to the 04+ XJ8/S/S-Type is a fine nav and the integration with all the other vehicle functions (climate, phone etc) is excellent and the nav itself is very useable....

the only problem i have with the system is the graphics quality compared to my BMW and other flagship models...however it is a Jaguar and being british, i dont expect its electronic graphics to be the same :P Overall i still think its a great, easy to use system, it could add more street names though
