Default Amber light next to Homelink buttons

On my 2004 XJR, there is a small amber light next to the middle Homelink button that is always lit. Does anyone know the purpose of this light, whether it is supposed to be on, how to turn it off, etc.?

Thanks.

It lights the center console area. I love it. My 06 Acura TL had one too. Easier to see stuff at night w/o lights.

Default Console Light

Yes, it is a console light - it comes on only when the headlights or parking lights are on. It is documented in the owner's manual.

for reading a map when driving without the bright lights on in the cabin that could limit visibility

This is the first car I've owned that has had it, and I gotta say... I love it! Great idea! Adds a nice little "glow" to the interior too.

Actually, that's exactly Jag's point. They call that glow "ambiance lighting".

Nice touch, I think.

Cheers,

the ones in the rear by the handles were pointed out by my kids one night. I never knew about them. From the cockpit, they are not visible. SO cool. Many surprises this car has shown me, in a good way.

The lights are great, I first came across a similar set up in a friend's BMW that he got new way back in 1996, it was the 7 series at the time and I had an 1990 XJ40 at the time and was racking my brains as to how to try to fit something similar as I thought they were so cool.
