Unhappy Another Air Suspension Question

2004 XJ8. Air Suspension Fault keeps coming up on the dash. Turn the car off for a couple of hours and message goes away. Drive for couple of miles and fault comes back. Took the car to my mechanic (who in the past has been very good) he read code 2302. He bled the shocks and drove the car. Car rose back up on its own. He said he has checked all the sensors and car is showing level all around. He said he doesn't believe it is the compressor and is not sure what the problem is. I am baffled at this point and would appreciate any and all comments.
Thanks

Hi unvpaypro,

The C2302 Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) indicates a "Levelling Plausibility Error," meaning the air suspension has not been able to bring the vehicle to its proper level. The most common cause of this code is the compressor failing to pressurize the system within the alloted 120 seconds at startup before it is shut down by the Air Suspension Control Module (ASM) to protect the piston ring seal and cylinder head from overheating. The most common cause is a worn piston ring seal. Forum member Bagpipingandy (bagpipingandy.com) manufactures an affordable precision replacement piston ring, and replacing it is relatively easy. Below are photos showing how I did it on our '04 XJR. Most owners won't replace the desiccant beads in the air dryer, but I would recommend that the air dryer be disconnected so the spring and check valve can be cleaned of any corrosion, and also that the exhaust valve also be opened and cleaned.

P.S. If you use the Search function near the top of this page, you'll find lots of posts about C2302.

Cheers,
