Another front end rattle thread with a twist
I have a 2005 Super V8 that has a typical front end clunk/rattle. I have had all the bushings checked and some replaced. I have Replaced sway bar end links checked ball joints, motor mounts, frame bolts even bumper support bolts looking for this rattle. It has been in the shop three weeks trying to find it. Today something odd happened. It was in the bay a long time under the shop heater with the hood up while the mechanic was working on another car and the shop heater was blowing down on the engine compartment. It was pretty warm under the hood from being there about 45 minutes. When the Tech went for a test drive it was perfect not one rattle and drove great. Now up until today it has been cold out in the 10-20 degree range. Today was in the 40-50 degree range outside. My Indy thinks it may be the internal valving of the front air struts. When cold they are noisy and when hot the fluid inside the shock is thin and the shocks are quiet. When these air shocks fail is this one of the symptoms? Other than the noise, the front end and shocks ride fine and dampen well. I'd hate to buy two new front shocks and find out I spent more money for not. I have read that the shock bushings fail but those have been checked too and are fine. When these shocks fail do they tend to get noisy?
I have the same rattle issue. Replaced the sway links and hit sway bar with rubber mallet with no noise. When I strike the tire, I get a rattle from the Brembos. Its not the rear cover plate, because I hold it, its a wheel/caliper noise. I get the rattle at slow speeds. And have not really seen an answer to this problem.
Its interesting you say that the shock can be noisy. Like my previous post that is what my indy ended up saying. I contacted Arnott to ask if this can happen, They told me it was not the shock and said I would be wasting my money buying Arnott shocks to fix a noise problem and not to bother. They told me as long as they are holding air and I have a good ride height the shocks are fine. I dont know what to do, Arnott sells shocks and I figured they would want to sell me shocks but they told me the shocks on my Jag dont get noisy. I will have to search for threads about shock noise. The Arnott tech told me because it was a temp. issue it would be more likely to be one or more of the front four cradle bushings. Has anyone else had noisey front shocks that were noticable in cold temps and gone in hot temps? I dont know what to do, I'd hate to buy new shocks and have them still be noisy. My Front shocks hold air and the ride height is spot on.
I will get the car on a lift and start tightening bolts and see if anything came loose. It's my wife's driver and she took it to a local shop and they gave her a quote for 7K to replace, basically everything they could see and list. Never test drove it, just saw the car, her jewerly and her willingness to give them her credit card for an inspection. Like I have read and how it sounds, is something has come loose. 34k miles cant be much wrong down there. Maybe front lower arm bush, but I cant tell until I get it off the ground. I am willing to bet that its the cradle, or possibly an outer tie rod, but am leaning to the cradle. These aluminum frames are very thin and rigid. They will transmit sounds all over the place. Sorta like a house roof leak. Just cause its leaking in the kitchen, doesn't mean the leak it over the kitchen.
