This might sound like a stupid question but, how is the boot supposed to open? Mine just pops open a little bit and I have to lift it open and it holds fine. Is it supposed to pop right open all the way? I'm thinking my struts might need replacing, but not sure.

 

The boot only releases (pops up a little) and you have to lift it the rest of the way. At least, that's how mine has always worked.
