Brembo Parking Brake Replacement
I replaced my Brembo Parking brake pads this weekend on my XJR. Ordered the pads from Rock Auto some time back and thought it was time since the weather has been warming up. I wanted to replace the pads because I could see a bit over 1/16" of lining left on the outside pad. Removal is quite straightfoward, remove parking brake caliper bolts, then punch on the pins holding the pads in. The calipers need to be wound back to make room for the new thicker pads.
To my disappointment the inner pad on one side was down to bare metal on one end, since the pads had worn unevenly. The other side was evenly worn.
On replacement I lubed up the caliper pins and could find no other issue. Resetting the parking brake took a few cycles on the manually reset the parking brake with the parking brake lever and turning on and off the car. All appears to be well now.

Hi,
I'm just about to do the same job, as mine have worn down to the metal on the inner pads too?, Can you advise me on the stripdown procedure, do I need to take the calipers off before I can remove the pads? I'm not sure how these calipers work? is there only one piston and does the opposite slide?
regards.

removal is really not hard at all. Disable the electronic parking brake by pulling up on the lever before turning the ignition. Then remove the parking brake caliper by removing the 2 bolts on the back of the caliper. I believe they are 13mm bolts. lift off the caliper, I worked on top of the rotor for support and punched out the two caliper pins from the inside going out. Then you can remove both pads from the caliper and repeat the procedure. The center part of the caliper needs to be turned to make room for the thicker(new) pads. I used a wrench being careful not to damage the rubber boot. There is a special tool that can be used as well, but I did not have one. My rotor did not look too bad, so I choose not to resurface or replace it prior to reassembly. I also cleaned and lubricated the caliper slides prior to assembly. Once installed on the car, you will need to manually reset the electronic parking brake by resetting the parking brake by pushing down on the lever inside the car a few times. I turned the ignition off between resetting the brake lever perhaps 4 times did the trick!

Hi Stu,
Not sure how long these pads last? my XJR has 97,000 miles on the clock, I've had the car for 3 years, done about 30,000 in it first time I have replaced them? my concern is how the inners wear out long before the outer ones?

I really have no idea why the parking brake wore out, my XJR turned 70K. Perhaps the cables or slides were hanging up a bit, but they really didn't look all that bad? The car was not driven parked in hilly areas?

Hi,
Just finished one side, what a job it turned out to be? the pins would not come out of the casting? I ended up splitting the halfs of the caliper only when the 2 pins snapped off at the end, I think the small bushes must have siezed, but the pins just have enough lip on them to locate back in the holes? replaced the pads lubed up the pads, pins and sliders reset the EPB, and attempting the other side in the morning.

sorry to hear that the pins snapped. Perhaps a little liquid wrench may be helpful on the other side or a tap with a center punch from the offending end before trying to remove the pins? Good luck on side 2

Hi Ryejag,
Just finished, and pleased to say the pins DID come out this time?,
Everything lubed up, went back together fine.
Only I've still got to somehow find out why on applying the handbrake I get a funny 'dry' sounding noise when the cables are being pulled.

Glad to hear side 2 went better!
I suspect the cables need some lube. I think I have some of the same sound and need to lube the cables more. I suspect thats why the brakes did wear out by not fully retracting.
