Default Buy it or not? Super

Ok, last minute jitters on a ncie 05 Super 8, 70k, 3 owners, ex-CPO car, seems well maintained but at a dealer so no history but cafax, needs front brakes and maybe rears in 10-12k, and also lower control arm bus now. $16.5, oem paint, non smoker and clean.

I'm aware of but maybe not prepared for the onslaught of maintenance so eyes are wider open(soon the wallet also).

Opinions? Always wanted one, been shopping 24 months and here's one 100 miles away for a decent $ I think.

Jag dealers have history on computer-they just need VIN.

You might have to get it via selling dealer since you do not own vehicle-yet.

Should be FOC to obtain.

Also ask seller phone no of previous owner. Why shouldn't he give it?

Air suspension struts often fail in the US unfortunately probably

due to cold weather but maybe Florida does not freeze.

70k is low miles for 05 car. I always buy low mileage used cars

You will love it.

jeffn-

I was in a similar situation last October. Had the option to trade a great car, no issues, etc.

Wanted a super and shopped for a good period of time. Ended up with the Super (2005 70K) miles and understood the need to plan for some maintenance items.

I think as long as you have some maintenance funds set aside and have a (reasonable) expectation of maintenance needs, you should be ok.

So far, I have done:
Thermostat
Front Shocks
Air Compressor Rebuild
Battery

With ALL the options the Super has, it still seems to be a hard value to beat.

I believe it is a challenge to find a (non jaguar) car at the price you mention with all aluminum body, supercharger, navigation, Bluetooth, adaptive cruise, tvs, rear trays, etc...

Enjoy-

Thanks for the advice. I phone the one jag dealer it was at last and they did 1-2 shox, reg maintenance and that was about it. It was sold by a Benz dlr in Houston new who now only handles Benzes so didn't want to know me. Carfax has some surprising records-resold in the 30k's as Jag Select so probably had good upkeep. And not to the dealer for service for 18 months, 12k miles and then traded in with deferred maintenance, brakes, bushings-owner probably got skittish like I did w/m3 when the warranty expired.

I had a local jag only shop look at it and he was impressed w/it.

Front brakes, maybe $450ish? & control bushes, ??$$______.

Will keep you posted.

I purchased my 2005 XJ8 VDP with about the same mileage sight unseen in North Carolina and drove it straight home to Canada.

Mine is fully optioned out the same as this super 8 that you are looking at except that mine is not equipped with the super charger. Lovely car and pleased I purchased it. Like you, I was told to put a little money aside for surprises. This made me expect to find stuff that would need fixing but so far after a year and a half’s ownership, all I have done is preventative maintenance and I have changed some cosmetic items on it after finding nothing really wrong withthe car.

OK, mechanical update-the inspector said the front wheel bearings a re gone also and they are a 1 piece design w/the hub, $397 ea side. Any truth in that?

If so I'm looking at front brakes, lower bushings and the hubs. He came up w/2400ish and the dealer would have been 4000 he claims.

Any advice on the repairs?

Hmm, very, very surprised to hear about front wheel bearings, in fact this is the first time I have seen these mentioned since I started posting on this site in 2010.

Of course brakes don't last forever, so new pads and discs is probably about right. Actually the rears don't last as long as the fronts, because there is no LSD, the car uses the rear brakes to stop wheel spin under power. Lower bushings are more common at the rear. My car is on 70k now, and has needed rear lower wishbones, amongst other things. Front suspension was OK when last checked. All the suspension parts are available on-line usually a lot cheaper than Jaguar agents. If you can get more detailed info on what the inspector found was needed, then better advice can be given. The front lower wishbone is formed from two separate parts, the rears are one piece. All these parts are aluminium forgings or castings with bushes and ball joints pressed in. Bushes are now becoming available separately, but not at Jaguar agents. Swapping out needs a press and suitable mandrels so as not to damage the aluminium component which is more susceptible to damage than the old steel stuff.

He said the front bushings are dripping ooze which means the liquid filled bushs are shot, lower control arms in front. Brakes are close but not according to the seller(natch). And now he's claiming the front bearings which on the Super only, are pressed in and sold a 1 piece setup at 397 ea.

Frankly, I think he though I was local and going to hammer the seller (he said split the difference) and give him the work which he said was not bad in a used jag And the rest of the car was lovely and rare. I've yet to see a work order/results yet. I think he does well w/local owners by beating Jag dealers by 30-50% when they can be beat by 50-75% in reality.

Well, when a doctor says you have a serious illness, and he has the cure, I always think a second opinion is a good idea !

I have seen some evidence of leakage on my bushes but am ignoring it FTB since

she still handles beautifully and we have no regular roadworthy test here!

Poly bushes are now (just available) on e bay uk but I can't advise you on

suitabilty but should be considered.

Yes you have to replace the hub not just the wheel bearing and I have seen the

part for 128 GBP but as Fraser says failure is rare. Are they noisy?

Bearings gone on both sides?

Discs and pads are not expensive and easy to fit

My motto-if any doubt-spend no money!!

Yep, I feel this inspector is trying to get me to hammer the seller down and also line his accounts.

Anyone else heard of bearing going at 72k? Even the inspector said it was a lo mile car at only 8k/yr.

Never read about a bearing on this model yet, so probably not. I did the brakes on mine at home, VERY easy to do yourself, if you're remotely good w/ tools. My recommendation...buy the car, and have the suspension work done at the shop. Save the brakes for yourself.

Never heard of anyone ever mentioning bearings at all before. My x350 is on 191000 miles and, touch wood, no sign of any bearing issues .

I'm up fro front hubs now at 140,000km
A dealer attempted to rip me off wanting to put in a new steering rack!!!!

Yes they are one piece and also contain the abs sensor.
Hubs are cheep and are a simple bolt on once the brakes are removed you expose the stub axle. Behind this are 4 bolts and the whole hub comes off.

On most cars you have a stub axle. The bearings are then mounted each side of the disk.
The stub axle is fixed in position.
On our cars we have a hub assembly. This contains the bearings and stub axle. The stub axle rotates and the bearings are inside the sealed unit

Cheers
