Can I get service records? Another lying salesperson.
Having a ball with the '05 VDP so far; love it. Question: the salesperson promised me several times he could get me the service records. In fact, it was supposedly part of the deal. However, he hasn't faxed them to me yet & is now saying he can "get me any records that don't have a Privacy issue with the previous owner." So far, the service records means him telling me "the suspension compressor was replaced in January 2009 & everything else is up-to-date." The records are at their sister dealership who supposedly serviced it. I say supposedly because it really chaps my *** that a guy would promise this & once the deal is done, he's probably pretty sure that I won't return the car; just not that important to me I guess. It only has 54k miles, so probably not much to see, but nevertheless, he told me he would get them for me. I hate to say it, but he's perpetuating the shady used-car salesman stigma.
Soooo.... do I.....
1. try to take the car back (giant pain in the butt, wrote a check for it which probably cleared today)
2. send a newspaper ad proof to the used car sales manager detailing how I was lied to simply to get a sale
3. Or can I simply get the records myself, perhaps tell them I may be a future customer, etc? Am I able to do that?
Tell me what to do. Thanks.

you just have to know what dealer did the service work. Warranty work is easy. It can be pulled from Jaguars dealer netwrok database. You can then call the dealer/s listed to get service work for customer pay work that was done there. There is NOT a central service record for customer pay work, only warranty work.

If the previous owner writes a letter releasing service records, then they can give them to you. I bought my XKR private sale and faxed the dealer the letter. Next day walked in an picked them all up- warranty and customer pay (the seller was loyal to that one shop). They were VERY helpful in planning what work I've done. If you don't know the previous owner, you might be able to get it through the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). Check your State Dept of Motor Vehicles.

Rather than copies of invoices maybe the servicing dealer(s) will run a "history" print-out of all work done....and not run afoul of any privacy laws? It won't have ALL the details you'd see on an invoice copy but most the info will be there.
The previous owner's name will be at the top of each page but that's what scissors are for.
Just a thought.
Cheers

I think your salesman is correct. I had a similar request when I bought my car and they were unable to produce the records due to "privacy" issues. The Serv. Dept. was perfectly willing to tell me which routine maintenance items had been done, insofar as they could tell, but would not let me see the computer screen. They were not forthcoming in any way re corrective maintenance, warranty or no.. They told me that liability concerns prevented them from releasing work data commissioned buy any previous owner.
Therefore, "hang the lawyers" not the salesman. O hell. Hang em both. Let the angels sort em out.
For what it's worth, I had a Chrysler dealer, some 20 years ago, who would access the computer on any Chrysler vehicle on his lot and share the data with me. No hard copy mind you.

There should be at least the dealer service stamps in the Service Book in the owner wallet in the glovebox. These have the dealer stamp and date of service in the relevant box for the service. The actual invoices can, of course, sometimes be difficult to get. You should see five of these, plus the pre-delivery inspection stamp. (service every 10k OR yearly, whichever comes first. First owners not using their cars much usually forget about the second one.
At 54k miles, I would expect the air suspension compressor to have been replaced, or in the last few months of its rather limited life. However service exchange units are available and fitting is fairly simple

Good news: records were faxed to me today, and the suspension compressor and the transmission reflash were done. All it took was for me to send an email saying "I would hate for the deal to go bad and me return the car this week." so Fraser, you were correct about the compressor. This helps confirm my purchase. Again, many thanks. An interesting note though, coming from a Honda and Toyota guy, I'm fairly shocked at some of the costs. For example: $562 to replace the lambs wool mats?? My gosh, I can buy 5 live sheep for less than that. And then I would have 5 sheep!
