Default collision avoidance? 05 XJR

I was rolling in the fast lane @ around 70 mph the other day, with the cruise control on. A car pulled into my lane pretty much directly in front of me. I expected the cruise control to reduce throttle, but the nose dropped, and it was actually braking for me. I didn't realize that it had this feature, or am imagining that? It certainly felt for real, the seat belt tightened against my chest, and it dropped to match his speed, (about 50 MPH.)

This was discussed very recently
A tale of two 2004 XJR's - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

Yes the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) will brake when active. Normal cruise control doesn't (since it doesn't have distance following).

When ACC is inactive, it will not brake but will give an alert provided a "secret switch" is on. Detail in the above thread, or the owners manual.

Glad to hear it works! Whew!

I remember the first time I drove the Jag and I suddenly realised I was doing 50mph behind a truck. I pulled out and suddenly back up to 70 then I had the aaah moment.

I'm surprised, considering where computers were in 2005, but delighted that it has this feature. I'll never depend on it, that's how folks are crashing the auto pilot Teslas. That system works fine 99% of the time, but not 100%. I'll have to try it with the switch enabled, likely the noise will turn me off, & I'll turn it off.

It hasn't done that to me yet. Does it do it stately, and Jaguar like, or does it do it XJR like & back shift & get back to speed ASAP?

Why sure. It will run you right out of the state before you know it. Even in Texas.

Loved reading this, both as an Ontario resident, auto journalist as well as an ex-owner of an '08 XJR Portfolio.

Well written and I really hope you enjoy it. Also, you've owned a TON of cool Speed Test stuff.

If you're referring to me (signature list), yeah a Mk10 was my first love. Say no more. But my X358 Sunday Driver is only a V6, so I have to live through these guys.

If you're referring to Eric, the X350 is the largest XJ to date (until a later one), and an R, so no wonder he needs Texas to exercise it.

Frankly, it is huge compared to my 97 XJ6, and that is taking some getting used to. It is better in almost every way, but the bulk of it makes things like being able to see the right front fender the stuff of dreams. I'm 6' tall and long in the waist, So I'd imagine my 5' 4" wife has just taken for granted; that there must be a fender over there somewhere. It is quick, and sure footed, & much easier to enter and exit and that was what I was shopping for when I found this one. I have to fold up to get out of the 97, and that assumes there is sufficient space to open the door completely.

You were lucky! (I'm thinking of the sketch "Four Yorkshiremen")
Try an E-Type. I just assisted one to park behind me at a Jag Club meeting yesterday. My outstretched arms weren't long enough to show the distance. I reckon only 1/2 the E-Type bonnet is visible from the drivers seat. (on my own many years ago, we had a string hanging from the garage ceiling...which would touch the windscreen...)
This may not be apparent from the outside, but the X350/X358 does have a centre-bonnet-bulge reminiscent of an E-Type, albeit less of one, and only really noticeable from the drivers seat, if you are looking for weird facts etc etc.
