Question Config E dashboard message - RESOLVED

CONFIG E message on XJ8 4,2 VIN G40944 ( HELP )

Last week , after 3 years of trouble free driving ! ( happy time ) , suddenly after 2 days rest ( for the car not for me ! ) I had a big surprise after the first key on ( even if I was warned by my 2 years old son who said me " dad your car is broken " before I enter the car !

Engine didn't start and a lot of message appears in the dash board ( it is an approximate translation as my car speaks in French ! ) with both orange and red light flashing , engine light on , brake light on

Config E
Engine system anomaly
Gear box anomaly
ABS anomaly
DSC not operative
Park break anomaly
After reading most of the related threads here( always a good information's source ) , I suspected the battery (was 7 years old and measured at 12,3 V with ignition off )

I changed the battery by a new fully charged one ( 13 V ) , and in order to avoid any problem , I don't disconnect the old battery during the change ( use the lawn mower battery in parallel during the replacement )

Ignition on : same issues ! ( plus radio code lost and not found in the papers of the car ! , but it is not the main problem now )

I disconnected the battery for a while , and then some of the messages have disappeared ( engine and park brake ones )
I checked the fault code ( see related picts )
After clearing the fault , the engine starts , fault came again , engine seems to run well at idle ( engine light is off on the dash )

A cut the engine , and impossible to restart without clearing the fault ( but maybe it is just a coincidence that the engine start after clearing the fault )

I made a short drive ( with still orange and red light flashing , even if I know it is not recommended ) and with the remaining messages in the dashboard

Config E
Gear box anomaly
ABS anomaly
DSC not operative

Gear change is strange , and engine power seems very low ( limp home mode ? )

I am now very confused about next step to do

Any help will be welcomed , and I suppose it can be useful for other member’s too

Thanks in advance

Philippe

This series of messages is typical of what happens when the throttle body needs rebuilding or replacing. The throttle position sensor (TPS) has possibly failed.

I read the throttle position on the diag tool , without any action on the pedal it is 7% and with foot on the floor it is 100% , it seems ok
I am surprised that an engine part failure can cause message about brake ! electronic is a big mystery for me !
but effectivly , the throttle motor make a noise that I never heard before
You speak of rebuilt the throttlr body , is it a DIY job or does it need a new part ?
thanks again

Config E is the giveaway here.

One of our X350's had Config D error message after the General Electric Module lost it's programming (long story). In the end we had to reprogram the entire car to get all the modules talking to each other. You need a dealer-level diagnostic system (IDS/SDD) to do this.

See your code P0603, that's "Internal Control Module Keep Alive Memory (KAM) Error", I never had that before, but that is the cause for the Config E message and the flashing red/orange lights. The Evap Emissions alone would not make the lights flash. Flashing lights means loss of programming.

The book says possible cause for P0603 is ECM failure. You need to get hooked up to an IDS/SDD for this one.

EDIT

Can't rule out the TPS either, when they go they mess everything up, but it seems unlikely since you have the 7% and 100% at close & open. There will likely be other codes that your diagnostic system cannot see, only the IDS/SDD.

Thumbs up

Thanks a lot for your analyse ,

it seems my only choice is to go to the main dealer for more analysis hoping they will find the solution , here ( in France ) Jag dealers sells 90% diesel and I am afraid they don't have the habit of this kind of failure

Each of the config messages relates to the various modules.

Config D is the REM. I had this a while back and fixed it by re-flashing both the ECU and REM

I cant seem to find the list on config messages bit as Cambo said you need to get hooked up to SDD

You can have a dealer do this or purchase your own mongoose. Getting uour own mongoose will save you a heap.

Cheers

You cannot use deduction to analyze the faults. The TPS is a dual potentiometer. The ECU analyzes the outputs of both potentiometers and compares the two. If there is a mismatch, all hell breaks loose and you get all those lights.

Hello and as always we ALL hate to see a cat down from any part of the world, but please allow me to shed some experience with you...ok as mentioned above yes, some of those codes are throttle body related dsc,abs,gearbox etc.and most of the time you can just unplug the neg battery terminal and then go and check your throttle body connections...these little guys can throw the ecu in a frenzy,and also send the car into phase one limp mode. and disabling the tranny control module.If you have a decent scanner that reads Jaguar codes with Jaguar software you can most of the time erase this hickup and reestablish communication if it isnt a true failure of a part...config " d" is your driver door module and will flash amber. and a sure give away is that your seat wont memorize your settings,nor recognize your key fob,and at times it will have to be replaced...Keep in mind that the "config" prefix means that something has lost its programming,not actually failed.The config " E" is ecu,config"A" is abs and config "D" is the driver door module.I recommend that if you have the extra funds,purchase a Launch c-reader 8 (300.00) its a handheld code reader with Jaguar specific codes,and can reset many items and sensors on the car.Also Check for corrosion at the ecu harness.It is located underneath the pollen filter housing box,held by 4-10mm bolts.You will need a tamper proof torx head I believe size 27.Make sure you use rubber gloves and do not touch the pins with your hands.If you see corrosion get some CRC electra motive and spray it and hose it off with air 2 times.Keep us posted....and until next time happy wrenching...

Let me add one more thing, if the pins are clean,you tried a hard reset by disconnecting the battery for 2 hours,not 30 minutes. Then the ecu may need to be reprogrammed,but that code reader can definitely erase these codes...I have done this on two xj models...Erase the codes first, then unplug the battery and allow the car to sit for 2 hours, make sure both terminals are disconnected. not just the neg terminal.While sitting clean and inspect the ecu harness and make sure that the drain guides are clear also,that may lead to water damage to the ecu as a precaution.

Just have news from the dealer who is analysing the car for 3 days

failure should came from the hydraulic block inside the gearbox !

4000 € to fix it ! ( hope is is really the root cause ! )

always surprised that it can give ABS and TSC failure message also !

Oh no. Any chance of getting a second opinion? I doubt very much that's the case, it's a programming issue, not something mechanical.

Before you start please ask them to give you a list of all the codes that were stored.

absolutely, I agree 100% with Cambo351...that has nothing to do with mechanical failure, it is a configuration fault and electrical related.You def need a second opinion if they are saying it is a gearbox failure issue.

I totally agree with your comments , and the dealer was not very sure also , but he said we need to replace the valve body asy , and then see what happen ! , I am not a poker man ! paying 4000 € just to see if it works !
I think I will take back the car and as you propose have an electronic diag from a spécialist , if fault is confirmed on a solenoid in the gearbox , it can be replace ( cost about 30 € ) quiet easyli , see a video on this subject on e BMW

Just confirming Config E is the code for the ECU needing a reflash using SDD

This is all listed in the TSB 413-02

Issue:
In case any of the messages listed below are displayed on the Message Center this indicates that the Control Module, (CM), referred to is not programmed correctly and must be replaced by a new PECUS programmed CM.

Each CM has a code, listed below, which will appear if a fault develops. Each code also has its own position in the Message Center display, as shown in Illustration 1.
PECUS (Programming Electronic Control Unit) always appears before this type of message.

A= ABS Control Module
B= Body Processor Module
D=Driver Seat Control Module
E=Engine Control Module
I=Instrument Pack
K=Passenger Rear Door Control Module
P=Passenger Seat Control Module
R=Driver Rear Door Control Module
S=Security and Locking Control Module
T=Transmission Control Module
DD=Driver Door Control Module
PD=Passenger Door Control Module

the dealer propose to replace the whole mecatronic unit because in Jag part list it is only sold as an complete unit , they spoke of a solenoid failure ( one of the 7 inside the geargox , 3 blue , 3 yellow , one grey )

Does someone already got this kind of fault at quite low mileage ( 75000 km )

in order to reduce the bill , I will take back the car and replace only the defective solenoid
If it don't work , the next step should be to replace the macatronic unit by a recondionned one

more news when I will got the car back

thanks everybody for your help

I really doubt you need anything more than a refalsh of the ECU

Save yourself heaps and get yourself a Mongoose cable and SDD.
You can then diagnose and reflash this yourself

You will probably find buying the cable will be less than the dealer charges to do a diag session on the car

I didn't know that ECU reflash can be a DIY job , usual diag tools can"t do that ? it need the proper files

do you have tolls make or models that can be used for this ?

Thanks

Just do a search for the Mongoose JLR

I got mine from uobd2.com, it will come with a copy of the factory diags (SDD)
