The message centre has a "config E" error but NO mention of amber/red

lights on the dash and the car runs and drives fine therefore logically the

message is a red herring?

I have no experience of this type of fault but we know that this Jag can

suffer from electronic "funnies" for want of a better word.

I use my instincts when buying used cars (never bought new), take risks

and it usually works out OK.

I also find it hard to resist what appears to be a bargain especially when it is

a secondhand car.

It takes time to find cream of the crop. Of course you have to do your home works to get one. It took me 3 years to find one with low miles and good price. This one is in Texas and might be near you. 32K miles compared to 70 plus mile.

There was another 2004 VP to be had for $8,200.00 in texas and only had 30K plus miles. You also indicated you looking for a Jag for the lady of the house like myself. My wife probably does not want me to bring a car home at any price that needs to be work on especially of its a daily driver;and potentially more than a backyard mechanic can chew.

Good luck

OP originally mentioned both Amber and Red lights flashing along w/ the Config E message displayed...

- typically a "Config E" accompanies flashing Amber and Red lights...

More concerning, however, is that the owner informed me that the error message "Config E" is displayed in the message center... And after a bit of research it would seem that is probably related to the ECU, and a reflash might take care of it, or it could be more ominous... Who knows?

This is all I know so far, but I'm not going to be able to check the car out in person until this coming Tuesday. I'm told that it runs and drives beautifully, so I'm inclined to believe that the ECU is probably not FUBAR...

Regardless of these issues, I'm leaning towards going through with the purchase, as having the opportunity to acquire a one-owner '05 VDP for only $9,000 is one that I'm unlikely to get again anytime soon...

Yes you are correct the config e means that the ecu needs reflashing, but my question is what else is needed?. Usually if you reflash the ecu you will need to reflash the tcm also to have the correct calibration files for them to work in sink. I have saw many times that most x350 models with this either have a dirty pin ecu harness ,or water damage to the ecu, or either a failing ecu. My advise is to have it looked at by Jaguar. You do not want to buy this car and have to replace the ecu for 5k.

Exactly! Couldn't have said it better myself..

I just re-flashed my ECM/TCM on Monday on my 04 XJ8 to ensure I have the latest TCM calibration files (mine were original from the factory).

ECM is re-flashed first. I have WDS.

At one point in the ECM re-flash process the "Config E" was present along w/ the amber/red lights.

After re-flashing the ECM successfully, the TCM must be immediately re-flashed as 912guy pointed out.

I know WDS might not have the newest calibration files available but the system is stable vs. playing around with Mongoose...

Again, the general consensus here is getting the car to Jaguar to check it out and don't be shocked if they tell you your ECU might be crapped out - $5K is on the low end for the ECU replacement, unfortunately.

So, $7K plus $5K++ (cause there will be other issues) = a lot of $$$ for a car w/ 110K miles...

Just My $0.02

I found this thread and I now the proud second owner of this zircon blue 2005 XJ8.

New brakes, rotors, tires and two new wheel sensors followed up by a reflash by the dealer and the car is back to 100%.

It is in really nice condition and we justed turned 80,000 miles (photo courtesy of my wife as passenger)Considering '05 X350 with "Config E" Error-80k-80-mph.jpg.
