[QUOTE=steve11;184562]Yes, Dexcool is the correct commercial brand anti-freeze to use.

Steve11, I cannot get Dexcool orange here. I can get Caltex Havoline Xtended Life Coolant, which meets the requirements of Ford WSS-M97B44-D (this is what is stipulated in the X350 Workshop Manual), so do you think I will be okay to top-up with this, even if it does not match any existing colour, please?

- I did a flush with the Orange Dex cool once I replaced my thermostat housing. It was not hard it just took some time. I would keep the same coolant if possible and not mix. IF you need very little just add distilled water. If you do the full flush, I would completly remove the bleeder screw in the overflow when filling. I noticed there was much better liquid flow when it was completly removed.

After that, cap it and run it up to operating temp. If you do this 3-4 times with distilled water you'll completely flush the whole system. After that, do one last drain and at straight non premixed coolant get your water/coolant mix. It's not perfectly 50/50, but it will be close.
Hello Torrid. I realise this is an old-ish post, but please can you confirm whether the pump will still circulate coolant (even if the thermostat is closed), or do I need to get up to operating temperature first, switch off but leave the ignition on and then wait until it has cooled sufficiently enough to risk opening the header cap?

Steve, when you say to add pure Dexcool to the car do you mean non diluted? The only orange coolant I can find is non diluted and says to mix 50/50 and thats always been my understanding. I'm new to doing my own work so just a little confused. Do I not mix it first?

That is what he says if you're following his entire process because in earlier stage he's using only water.
From his post:
"First remove the FRONT undertray (directly under the front bumper) to expose the radiator drain plug on the lefhand side of the radiator. Open the plastic plug, catch coolant in a pan. The plug can be completely removed, or you can just let it extend, it will hold itself in place. Now loosen the expansion tank cover. Also, on the expansion tank you'll find a plastic bleed screw about the size of a dime. loosen it too enough to let air through. Once the drain is completed, (about 5 qts) replace the drain plug, fill the system with pure distilled water. Tighten the bleed screw, replace the cap, start the engine and go for at least a 15 minute drive with the heater in HIGH, High fans. Return and repeat this entire process two more times with distilled water - drain/refill/drive/drain, heater always on high the entire drive.

On the fourth cycle - Drain, close the drain plug, replace the undertray, fill with approx. 5 qts of PURE DEXCOOL."

In his process, you fill with distilled water, drive, drain and fill, repeat etc to fully dilute what mixture remains in the engine after the initial drain. Then, per his process, you perform the last fill using undiluted Dexcool. Once it mixes with the water left in the system, you have a 50/50 mix.

Yes it needs to be 50/50 when you add it. If you bought the 50/50 you are good, if not you will need to add distilled water to get it to 50/50. I live in Las Vegas, so with the heat I am about 60/40 coolant on all my cars.

I think he is referring to the drain bolt (drain plug) found on some engine blocks to get the coolant out of the water jacket. I don't see them much anymore.

I cannot find any reference for a drain plugs on the block. My other cars, a 2002 and a 2007 have them.
