Dead Screen after NAV Update attempt
I tried to update my NAV DVD. It was not reading the new DVD, so I put the original back in. Now my NAV, CLIMATE, RADIO etc screen is black. Nothing.
I tried redoing the NAV update, even disconnected that battery. Nothing.
HELP !
2006 XJ8
Thx.

How do you know it was not reading the new DVD? Where did you get it? Turn the key on, put the new disc back in and wait at least 30 minutes. If it fails, put the original disk back in and wait 30 minutes. It will recover.
It kept asking me to insert the DVD, but it was already in. I put the original DVD back in, let it sit for 45 minutes. Still a black screen, and now the DVD won't eject! I'm probably going to the dealer tomorrow.
I see you've found the right thread - looks like you need to make a software disk.
I don't know if the file in this link

will work for your system - that one is for Denso satnav.

Where did you get the dvd? These units are pretty foolproof. You can't kill one by putting in a wrong disc. Even if you put in a bad disc and screwed up the programming it should still reload the operating system when you put a good disc in.
---I read about the "secret" diagnostic screen, that can force a s/w update. But I'm not sure how to pull that screen up (key on, then Nav-Up Arrow on Blower, repeat 3 times,etc.). Any advice would be appreciated.
The disc contains not only the navigation maps, but the operating system, which will be different for different cars. The firmware in the system just looks for newer software when the disc loads, but that's all it does. You need an actual Jaguar disc. I haven't heard of anyone bricking the unit by putting a different dvd in it, but perhaps something is preventing yours from loading the old software. For one thing, you have the sequence wrong. If you turn the car off after you put the disc in you WILL cause a failure. You NEVER interrupt an update. You also say you turn the key "only to on." Do you mean the first click of the switch? It needs to be in the second click.
Start the car. Put the old DVD in the drive and leave the car running for 30 minutes. It should load. If not, you can try a new disc. You can get one here: 2012 JAGUAR XJ, X&S-TYPE GPS NAVIGATION MAP UPDATE DVD for sale Several people have used this with no problem. It's a copy of a genuine Jaguar disc so as long as it isn't physically damaged you're good. I would recommend making a copy when you get it just in case something happens to it. You need to rip it as an ISO image which you can then keep on your hard drive, or burn the image to a blank disc and keep it in the same place.
I have seen places on line where you can download these images, but there are no guarantees that they will work or don't contain malicious code. They are, after all, pirated copies. So is the ioffer disc, but you have plausible deniability there and you are probably safe as the consumer. Start uploading it to others and that's a different story.

gmcgann, thanks, but that did not work either. I start the car, put in the factory DVD and waited 45 minutes while the car is running . still a black screen on the head unit. my dealer suggested removing both battery cables for this procedure, which I did before starting the car. I also noticed a deep scratch on the factory DVD. hopefully whatever the dealer uses will fix the problem, it's going there tomorrow.
-Just realized- I burned the Loading.KWI file on a single layer DVD. I'll reburn on a dual layer DVD and try it again (note to all, dual layer DVDs have over 8GB capacity - single layer DVDs are around 4GB).

One other note, only the ORIGINAL CD will function in the NAV, some time ago I tried to copy and archive the original, no copy would ever work. I tried different copy software, different CD brands and types; nothing worked. A copy just will not work like the Map DVD copies will.
That CD will have to be put in and the ignition left on for 20-30 minutes. If that recovers the unit and you get to a white screen or a Leaper, you should be able to load the current software from your Map DVD and be good to go. If that doesn't recover it, there really isn't any other choice but an exchange NAV unit.
Good luck!
