Is this a car with the ZF 6HP26 (pardon me for not knowing!) - if so, the S-Types use it and have a habit of doing this when one or both the bolts come loose or even fall out that hold the shift cable to the side of the trans. 8mm I seem to recall.

this is an electronic click not a mechanical. I've searched but no thread seems to show or I'm just missing it accidentally.

Any fault messages such as "Cannot apply Parkbrake" or "Parkbrake fault"?

I had those issues a few times and turned out to be the wiring connections near the rear diff............wiring chafed through, especially worse when wet, raining, car wash etc.

no fault messages at all. its happens now every time in any weather conditions, but it always manages and eventually goes out of park and into gear.

Check the bolts that secure the shift cables. This happened to me and that was the issue. Luckily, I didn't lose them, but they had come loose. I put some LocTite on the them and put them back it - no issues.

Not saying that's your issue, but it's an easy thing to check.

Hi Josh,

I think the ideas already offered by others are more likely, but one additional possibility is the green & black Brake Pressure Switch mounted to the left of the brake pedal lever. If that switch is not functioning correctly, or is not fully twisted in its mounting plate, the gear shift lever will not be released from Park. The switch has an interlock built into its housing and must be fully twisted into its mounting plate before it will operate, so it could be that your switch is not fully seated.

There are two switches, the green & black one, and a blue & white one which is the Cruise Control Release switch. I have photos of those switches but haven't had a chance to upload them.

Try the suggestions offered by others first, but if you still have a problem, the brake switch will be worth checking.

Cheers,

Don
