Hello! I’m in need for a new mirror and found this one on eBay. The seller don’t know if it has power folding or not. It has a lot of wires at least. Is it possible to see if this one has power folding?
I have a 2004 VDP, (I bought it used) with the original window sticker. The sticker says it has power fold mirrors, and it has a switch for folding, but they have never worked (for folding). My question is, how can I determine if they are in fact power fold mirrors or not? Although the owners manual says not to manually fold them, they will fold manually, which is how they were when I purchased the car, about 10 years ago. TIA for any insight anyone may have.
Thanks for that post. i didn't even know that button was there. Mine fold with the button with the key in on position or by pushing the key fob lock twice. I doubt that you would have the fold button if it didn't have power fold.
I seem to recall a thread where the discussion focused on the number of wires running into the mirror. Be careful to count wires; not just the number of wires the connector is capable of supporting (it is not unusual to have un-wired pins in a connector). From the 2004 XJ Electrical Guide; side mirrors with Fold-Flat mirrors have 12 wires running into the mirror (diagram below). There is a note on the diagram suggesting these are absent for mirrors without Fold-Flat capability. The Red and Yellow/Red wires are dedicated to Fold-Flat (both left and right side mirrors). If you have 12 wires running into the mirror from the connector it looks like it will have Fold-Flat capability.
The mirrors can fail to fold due to corrosion of the Mazak casting behind the mirror covers. Once this is cleaned off and the mirror lubricated appropriately, movement can be restored. As a 2004, a 15 year old vehicle, my money is on corrosion-induced seizure.
Normally, if you have the fold button and if the mirrors are seized then they tend to make a noise when trying to move. It sounds a little like an electrical motor whining over and over where it is trying to pull the mirror in or out. Sometimes they clonk as well when they manage to get past part of the corrosion.
My bet is that they are seized.
Mine would not move and I took the mirror apart (removed the access panel and the back of the mirror and cleaned out and lubricated the mechanism. All has worked since then.
No noises at all from the mirrors when button pressed. Will check the wires if and when the door card is removed. I've lived with it for 10 years, so it is a low priority item. Car has always been garaged, and in So. Cal., so doubt corrosion is the problem. Will still try to remove the mirror cover to check. Thanks for all your responses.
