Door lock issue…funny but annoying
My much beloved `05 XJ8 has developed an annoying issue.
When I start the car in P, I can lock the doors pressing the little handle above the large door handle and it locks.
And it unlocks with the small handle in the door handle fine as long as I have not moved from P to D.
I can also press the button in the dashboard and all the doors lock and unlock.
So far so good! Everything works as it should.
Now comes the funny part:
Once I set the gear lever to D all the doors lock as they are supposed to do. When I stop the car and put the gear lever back into P and want to open the drivers door, nothing happens. No door will unlock.
If you open any of the passenger doors, all doors will unlock and you can get out.
If you press the button on the dashboard all doors will unlock and you can get out.
If you press the the knob on the key fob, all doors will unlock and you can out.
But I can’t open that drivers door when I put the car back into P after the drive.
It can’t be the door handle mechanisms because as long as I have not put the car into D, everything works fine. Or can it?
Thanks for your input.

I have had a similar fault recently which is probably due to a failed
contact in the actuator (not the microswitch). These switches are integral with the actuator
and would not be easy to repair also the driver's door actuator (which is unique)
will be expensive to replace with new.
However after much thought (good for the brain at my age) there is
a solution and it's cheap!
This problem raises it's ugly head when you are inside the car
and need to open the driver's door which is locked due to driveaway locking.
Hence get rid of driveaway locking!
My local repairer had the software to do it for $80.
You may also find that after locking all doors with the remote
that you will need to unlock the driver's door only with a key.
I rarely lock my Jag so it's not a problem.

I have the same problem occasionally, in that when I stop and park the car the drivers door will not open/unlock with the handle.
My solution is to use the unlock function on the remote which then allows me to get out of the car.
It seems to happen most if I haven’t driven the car for a little bit so thinking low voltage might be playing a part ????

under the car and a bolt falls out (usually on your drive! )
Inspect this mechanism under the vehicle since it could be loose.
It was the right thing to bite the bullet and to replace the lock.
If you have the problem, do NOT double lock the car anymore. If you continue double locking the car and the problem gets worse in time, it can come to the point that you will not be able to unlock the door anymore. There are threads in the forum showing what then needs to be done in that case, and it is not nice (removing the door board with the door closed, etc.).
Best regards,
Thomas
