Default Dull Chrome Trim

Hello all,
I purchased an '04 jaguar xjr a little while ago and the chrome trim on the outside looks dull. I have tried "mothers plastic polish", and even a remedy I saw online "coca cola and tin foil". Neither of these worked, I was hoping someone out there could help me. If I did it correctly there should be a photo attached.
Please help me,
Jim

Never found anything that works. I think the metal has a coating like an anodized finish of sorts.

Apart from the exhaust trims made of stainless steel, the brightwork on these cars has a fairly thick layer of clear plastic over the shiny metal. Over time, damp creeps between metal and plastic and dulls it. It happens on all cars using this technology, it's not a fault specific to Jaguars. Polishing does nothing but polish the plastic layer and doesn't touch the dull metal. Replacement is the only real cure, probably from an eBay supplier. Or replace with black like my Sport, still shiny black after 10 years !

jim quinlan far be it for me to say, but quite awhile ago I was disgusted with the bright work on our '05 MY S Type, here is how I remedied it for a very low cost.

What I do for the trim around the windows, and I have tried everything, is to put some ATF on a rag and wipe down the trim. You have to do it every time you wash the car but it takes less then 2 minutes and the chrome trim looks like new.

I've tried the ATF and it works - kinda amazing but it does wash off and must be re-applied.

x358x250,
How long does it take you, maybe two minutes, if that even.

I find it comes up if you wipe it with Armorall on a rag. This can only be putting a polish on the plastic outer surface, so i don't believe that the chrome itself is tarnished, i think the plastic is dulled.

It seems to me that the trim is plastic with a bright metal plating on the inside.

All,
Thank you so much for your responses. I appreciate the feedback.
I do have one question though, when you say ATF are you talking Automatic Transmission fluid?
