Despite what it says on the filler cap the Jag agent in Cheltenham used Shell when they serviced mine, so that's what I used when I changed the oil this summer.

What matters is that the oil conforms to M2C 913-B (or -C, or -D).

I think I recall reading maybe a year or two ago that Jaguar had switched its motor oil sponsorship agreement to Shell (as had BMW), but the most recent publicity indicates that Jaguar has returned to Castrol. I assume that BP/Castrol are very aggressive in their pricing and sponsorship funding in order to maintain all of their OEM relationships:

Jag + Castrol is a marketing agreement, similar in the US to GM + Mobil. Nothing to do with technical superiority of the products.

In addition to the applicable spec, the correct viscosity must be selected.

BTW- anybody want to take a whack at actually answering the OP's question?

Not really - any of them is likely OK if they meet the Jag spec. Pick any.

Those of us who have informed the OP that we use the oil recommended by Jaguar, which costs a fraction of any of the oils he was considering, have made a courteous attempt to answer his question with our own opinions, without criticising him for considering more expensive "boutique" oils, which he has every right to do if he so wishes.

I use Mobil One 5-30 in my XJR. Mobil One is used in many cars as the factory fill in many high end vehicles.

Thanx for your reply to my concerns about selecting an engine oil, let me clarify a little here,

I never used anything but the suggested oil grade for my 2005 Jag super v8. always used the Castrol 5w30 synthethic. this car never drives in the winter, I do an average of 4000 kms per year.

if you look at my other posts concerning a little ticking noise at cold start, but disappears after a few minutes of warm up.....after advice from my trusted mechanic I went from 5w30 to 5w40.

I was thinking of different oil brands that might help reduce or remove this irritable tapping noise at cold start up only.

I was thinking that because this car is idle for 6 months a year during our winters and the fact that it does little mileage that maybe a mild engine clean will remove any sludge and clean the vvt????/

what do you think?

I don't know the source of your tick, but if it's valve related, I have found CD2 oil detergent to be very effective in quieting noisy lifters in some of our other vehicles. It might be worth a try. Given the capacity of a Jag's sump, you would probably want to use two bottles of CD2.

Cheers,

Don

First, thanks for replying. I had wondered if the discussion above had scared you off.

Your mechanic is probably mistaken in thinking that an oil with a thicker 'hot' spec will stop a mechanical noise exclusive to a cold engine. Using thick oils was a common practice to mask noise or low oil pressure (while at normal operating temps) caused by severe wear issues.

No. There's nothing magic about any of the boutique oils brands mentioned nor is there any significant difference in any of the main stream brands.

Modern engines do not collect sludge if given even half decent care. Engines in storage or only driven occasionally of any vintage do not collect sludge. The worst practice commonly seen is owners who feel the need to start the car and just let it idle. This, if anything will allow contamination of the oil and lead to problems in the long run. Maybe.

With 4,000 km/year, your car gets driven more than mine

Mine has the same tapping on start up usually after it's not been used for awhile

Just be mindful that the AJ series of engines do not use hydraulic, but shim based clearances on the valve train. If before thermal expansion of the aluminum you have objectionable noise, use a stethoscope to help pin down the bank and cylinder, and then check clearances. If you want to gently clean passages (like the VVT) use a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil at your oil change for the next couple of changes. It's safe and effective.
